The Openbank Aspar Team rider has achieved his second consecutive victory and has finished fourth in the second race
Openbank Aspar Team rider Kevin Zannoni has achieved at the Italian GP his second victory of his MotoE career. Zannoni has made an incredible start in the first race of the day and has climbed to first position after starting from fifth place. The Italian has shown great pace from the start and only Mattia Casadei has been able to follow him. Both have opened a gap at the front and have exchanged the first positions, but the Openbank Aspar Team rider has shown that he was one step ahead and has ended up distancing himself from his pursuer. Zannoni has crossed the finish line two tenths ahead of Casadei, achieving his second consecutive victory in MotoE. Brazilian Eric Granado has completed the podium by beating Massimo Roccoli by just eleven thousandths.
The day has been marked by the accident of Lukas Tulovic. In the first lap of the morning race, the German has suffered a crash and, as a consequence, the race has been stopped. The race could not be resumed at that time and has been postponed to 6:40 p.m. In this race, Zannoni has completed a great start and on the first lap he was already in a podium position. However, an incident with Granado on the first lap has relegated the Openbank Aspar Team rider to sixth place and he has dropped out of the leading group. Zannoni has not given up and he has tried to close the gap with his rivals until the last lap. In the end, he has finished fourth after overtaking Granado on the finish line, whom he has surpassed by only 35 thousandths. Casadei has won the race after fighting an intense battle with Alessandro Zaccone, who has finished second, and Héctor Garzó, who has been third. With his second place and his victory at the Italian GP, Casadei regains the lead in the electric category and leads Zannoni by six points. In the Teams World Championship, the Openbank Aspar Team is second, 26 points behind the leader.
Openbank Aspar Team rider Jordi Torres has finished in twelfth position in the first race in Mugello, but he has suffered a crash in the second. The Italian GP has not been easy for the Spanish, who has started from thirteenth position. Torres has not felt comfortable in the first race and has only been able to finish twelfth. In the second race, the Openbank Aspar Team rider has taken a step forward. However, in the last lap, after an incident with another rider, Torres has suffered a crash when he was running in tenth position. With the Italian GP being the halfway point of the championship, now MotoE has a three-week break before the Dutch GP.
Kevin Zannoni (VICTORY/ 4th): “The victory has been incredible. Winning at home is a fantastic thing. After the victory in Barcelona, repeating at the top of the podium was important because it shows that we are strong. It has been a very intense race with Mattia Casadei because he was always very close. In the second race I have felt good, a little worse than in the first because with the used tyres I have suffered a bit more and I have taken a lot of risks. The problem has been when Eric Granado has overtaken me on the first lap and has taken me out. From that moment on I have had to close the gap and I have had no slipstream. My pace has been good and I think I could have fought for the win. The important thing is to be at the front and always fight for the leading positions.”
Jordi Torres (12th/ crash): "It has been a Saturday from lowest to highest, although the results are still not coming. The first race has been very complicated. The feelings have not been good, I have fought more with myself than with my rivals and I have only been able to be twelfth. In the second race I expected to have a better feeling and it has been like that. I have managed to recover positions and little by little I have been moving forward. In the last lap, a rider has touched me and I have crashed. We have to keep working and not give up. We have three weeks of break to continue working and get to Assen as best as possible."
