The Spanish rider has finished third in the first race in Assen after Alessandro Zaccone’s disqualification
Héctor Garzó and Alessandro Zaccone have achieved in the Dutch GP their first MotoE victories of the season. The Spanish and the Italian, along with Óscar Gutiérrez, have been the protagonists of the races in Assen. Garzó has won the first race, while Zaccone had ended second and Gutiérrez, who has come back from eleventh position, had been third. However, Zaccone has been disqualified from the first race due to a tyre pressure infringement, causing Openbank Aspar Team rider Jordi Torres to climb to third position. In the second race, the winner has been Zaccone, who has led all the laps. Gutiérrez has finished second after coming back again, and Garzó has finished third.
Openbank Aspar Team rider Jordi Torres has completed in Assen his best weekend so far this season. After qualifying fourth yesterday, the Spanish has completed two great performances to finish inside the top 5 in both races today. In the first one, Torres had crossed the finish line in fourth position, but Alessandro Zaccone’s disqualification has meant that Torres finishes third, achieving his first podium of the season in MotoE. In the second race, Torres has managed to ride in second position, but after an intense battle and after being overtaken by another rider when there were yellow flags on the track, he has finished fifth, half a second off the podium.
His teammate Kevin Zannoni has experienced a bittersweet Saturday in Assen. Zannoni has started from third position and in the first race he has made a great start to take the holeshot. However, his rivals have not made it easy for him and as the laps have gone by he has started losing positions. In the last lap, when he was fourth, Eric Granado has hit him and both have crashed. Fortunately, he has been able to recover the bike and has finished in thirteenth position to score three more points in a race in which his main rival for the title to date, Mattia Casadei, has not scored points. Zannoni has replicated his great start in the second race, but the script has been also repeated in the following laps and he could only be seventh. With these results, the Openbank Aspar Team rider closes the gap with the World Championship leader, Mattia Casadei, and is only two points away from the first position, although now the standings are tightening and there are four riders separated by eleven points.
3rd/5th Jordi Torres: “It has been a pretty complete weekend. We started very well and we knew we had pace. The races are different from the practice sessions, we are always in groups and we cannot use our style well... We have to replicate what others do, and that hinders me on the straights. When I have been able to ride alone, I have shown that I have the speed, but when I have a rider close to me, it gets complicated. Despite everything, I have shown that I am still competitive and we have shown our potential.”
12+1/7th Kevin Zannoni: “It has been a difficult and unfortunate weekend. In the first race, when I was fourth and fighting for the podium, another rider has touched me and I have crashed. Despite this, I have been able to recover the bike and score two points that are very important for the championship. In the second race the track conditions have changed and things have not gone as we wanted. I have only been able to finish seventh and, although I have scored points, I expected more.”
