Who will be Alonso’s successor?

The reigning Moto3 team champion, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team, opens a new season without the 2024 dominator, David Alonso

The Moto3 riders have two things to celebrate this week. The first is that, after fourteen Sundays without races, a new season is starting. The second is that, finally, they will not have David Alonso on track. The Colombian, winner of 70% of the races contested in 2024 (the last seven in a row), a record man that got more victories than anyone else in history in a single season in the lightweight class, moves up a category and leaves his succession open. There are 26 riders running for Alonso's throne, some with more options to fight for the title than others. The pre-season tests held between Portimao and Jerez reveal names such as José Antonio Rueda, David Muñoz, Ángel Piqueras, or the rookies Álvaro Carpe or Máximo Quiles. But more veteran riders such as Dennis Foggia or Adrián Fernández cannot be ruled out.

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team starts 2025 with the absence of rookie Máximo Quiles. The rider from Murcia does not meet the minimum age to compete in the World Championship, 17 years old in his case after having finished in the top three in the Rookies Cup previously, until March 19. Thus, Quiles will miss the World Championship opener in Thailand and the second round, in Argentina. His replacement will be Austrian Jakob Rosenthaler, who will have on the other side of the garage the team's permanent rider Dennis Foggia. The Italian arrives from Moto2 to fight for a title that eluded him in 2021 and 2022, when he was fighting, among others, with Aspar Team riders Sergio García and Izan Guevara. Now, Foggia needs to complete his adaptation to the category again to continue fighting for podiums and victories.

Dennis Foggia: “I am happy to be heading to Thailand to start a new season. These days we will evaluate the set-up we had in Jerez with the data we have collected, and we will continue working to fine-tune the bike as much as possible. We are ready for the first race, step by step we will reach the top.”

Jakob Rosenthaler: “It’s obvious, but I’m very happy about this opportunity with the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team. It will be my first oversea race, it will be something different from what I’ve experienced before, but I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s like on the other side of the world. To learn the circuit, I did about 200 or 300 laps with the video game… I don’t know the exact number, but as many as I could. That’s all I could do for now.”
