The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider will start from ninth position tomorrow after coming from Q1. His teammate David Alonso will start from thirteenth place
Ángel Piqueras has shone in the Dutch GP qualifying and has achieved the first pole of his career in Moto3. The Spanish rider has surprised his rivals with the best time in Q2, achieved as he was taking the chequered flag, and tomorrow he will start for the first time from the first position on the grid. Piqueras has set a time of 1:39.746 and has beaten by just 74 thousandths the Japanese Taiyo Furusato, who will start from second place. The front row of the grid will be completed by Collin Veijer. The local hero was one of the favourites in the fight for pole after leading the last two practice sessions. However, with eight minutes left in the session, he has suffered a strong crash that has prevented him from improving his time.
The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team must come back tomorrow in the Dutch GP race. Rookie Joel Esteban will start from ninth place on a track in which he had never competed before. Esteban has gone from lowest to highest: in the morning he has finished really close from qualifying straight to Q2; he has passed Q1 and, subsequently, in Q2 he has achieved the ninth best time, half a second off pole. His teammate David Alonso has not had an easy Saturday in Assen. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider will start tomorrow from thirteenth place, an unusual position for the World Championship leader this season. The Colombian has been able to regain confidence after the two crashes he suffered yesterday, although he knows that he still has room for improvement, especially in the first and third sectors of the Dutch track. Alonso has already shown in the past that he is capable of winning from mid positions on the grid and tomorrow he will fight to repeat it and extend lead.
9th Joel Esteban 1:40.284 (+0.538): “I am very happy with the work we have done today, we have taken a big step forward compared to yesterday. I have not managed to qualify straight to Q2 because I have not been able to complete a clean lap in the last practice session. In Q1, I knew what I had to do and I have managed to get through the session. In Q2, I have been able to do a good lap and I have followed the reference of a rider who has helped me to understand many things for the race. I think tomorrow will be a fun day starting from ninth position.”
12+1 David Alonso 1:40.457 (+0.711): “After the two crashes I suffered yesterday I have managed to recover the pace in the last practice session and enter directly into Q2. In qualifying we have tried new things because we were missing a few tenths in the first and third sectors, but we are still missing something. Tomorrow we will have to learn from our rivals and focus on them to be able to take a step forward in those two areas of the track.”
