Thailand, a new challenge for record man David Alonso

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has already equalled Valentino Rossi's record for most wins in a year in the lightweight category and will fight to beat it this weekend in Thailand

CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso was crowned world champion two races ago at the Japanese GP, but last week in Australia he already showed that his ambition and motivation remain intact. The Colombian wants to continue making history in Moto3 and, to do so, his next challenge is to score his twelfth victory of the season at the Thai GP. If Alonso wins in Buriram, he will become the rider with the most wins in a season in the history of the lightweight category, improving Valentino Rossi's record that had remained unbeaten since 1997. In addition, a victory would allow him to continue increasing the Moto3 points record he achieved last weekend in Phillip Island, with 346, overtaking in one race less Joan Mir, who achieved 341 in 2017.

That victory would also help him equal a streak of five consecutive wins that occurred for the last time in the lightweight category in 2010, when Marc Márquez won all the races between Italy and Germany. Alonso already knows what it is like to win in Thailand. He did it on his first visit there in 2023 after a great last lap. In addition, with that victory Alonso became the best rookie of the season, three races before the end of the year. The champion will fight on the Thai track to get back-to-back wins there, something he has already achieved on two other circuits: Barcelona and Misano. The win, or a result that allows CFMOTO to score at most five points less than KTM, would offer the Chinese manufacturer its first manufacturers' title in the Moto3 World Championship. At the same time, a combination of positive results for the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team would allow the team to add its second teams’ title, two years after the first.

His teammate Joel Esteban faces a new track once again this weekend. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider is not satisfied with his performance in the last GPs and in Buriram he will work to continue improving in Moto3. Esteban hopes to adapt quickly to the characteristics of the Thai track in order to fight to get straight into Q2, which remains his pending subject. In the race, the rookie also has homework: he wants to improve in the first laps and fight with the leading group.

David Alonso: “The Australian race was a test, because after winning the World Championship, the motivation may not be the same. However, we showed that we are still focused, ambitious, and that we are going to keep fighting until the end.”

Joel Esteban: “We have to keep working to understand what has happened to us in the last few races, especially in the first laps. Instead of gaining positions in the first laps as I always did, I am going backwards. I am ready to give my all in Thailand.”
