The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider achieved one of the best times on Friday at Sachsenring, while his teammate Dennis Foggia was unable to secure direct passage to Q2
The second double-header of the season got underway on Friday at the Sachsenring circuit. The day, which took place under cloudy skies in Germany, ended with Máximo Quiles among the fastest in the category. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider set the fourth fastest time of the day. David Muñoz set the pace today, riding three tenths of a second faster than David Almansa, who finished second. Britain's Scott Ogden completed the top three. Dennis Foggia aimed for a place in Q2, but fell short in the final minutes and finished sixteenth, meaning he will have to go through Q1 tomorrow.
The first free practice session for the Moto3 riders began with the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team focused on adapting to the demanding German track in order to tackle the afternoon session with the best chances. Dennis Foggia secured a place in the top 10, while Máximo Quiles was only able to complete seven laps due to a technical problem. In the afternoon, the Spanish rider was forced to give his 100% and avoid mistakes in order to fine-tune his set-up, while also seeking direct entry into Q2. Quiles climbed up the rankings to the top of the standings and improved his morning times by more than two seconds. Thanks to his 1:25.220, he moved into fourth position, four tenths of a second behind the fastest rider, once again demonstrating his ability to excel whatever the circumstances. On the other hand, his teammate Dennis Foggia did not have the same feeling when riding. The Italian occupied the Q2 places for most of the session, although in the final minutes he struggled to stay in the top fourteen. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider set his best time in the final laps, also improving on his morning performance, and finished sixteenth with a time of 1:25.905. This means that tomorrow he will have to get through Q1 at the German Grand Prix.
4th Máximo Quiles 1:25.220 (+0.453): “It was a bit of a difficult day because this morning we had a technical problem with the bike, so I was hardly able to do any laps. The afternoon session was my first proper practice, so I took it easy and stayed relaxed. I managed to set a good time and felt good, although we need to improve in a couple of areas on the track. After how the day started, I'm very happy with the result. I feel strong and I'm looking forward to Saturday and a good qualifying session.”
16th Dennis Foggia 1:25.905 (+1.138): “It was a difficult day. Physically, I'm not 100% and everything was very tight today. We tried to get a place in Q2, but it wasn't possible. We have good speed, so we hope it doesn't rain tomorrow and we can get a good position for Sunday's race.”
