Quiles wins and is now the best rookie in Moto3 history

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider becomes the rookie with the most points and podium finishes in a Moto3 season

Máximo Quiles achieved a magnificent victory in the Portuguese Grand Prix, his third in his first year in Moto3. The intrepid CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider managed the final stretch of the race perfectly to cross the finish line more than a second and a half ahead of his only rival in the fight for the runner-up spot, Ángel Piqueras, who finished second. Japanese Taiyo Furusato completed the podium in third place. This victory makes Quiles the rookie with the most points and podium finishes in a season, surpassing David Alonso and Pedro Acosta. Quiles' victory keeps him in contention for the runner-up spot: with 263 points and nine podium finishes, he remains third in the overall standings, eight points behind second place.

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team saw Máximo Quiles complete one of his best races of the season. The rookie in the small category started the Portuguese event from the second row of the grid and, after a great start, moved into second place after the first corner. The leading group was large in the early laps, which, combined with the high pace of all the riders, led to constant changes in position. Among them, Quiles dropped to fifth place, but before the halfway point of the race, he was back in podium position. With nine laps to go, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider took the lead and defended it against his only rival in the fight for the runner-up spot, Ángel Piqueras. From that moment on, he set his own pace in the final laps, which were not for the faint-hearted, and opened up a gap that allowed him to cross the finish line almost two seconds ahead of the runner-up. On the other hand, Dennis Foggia had an unexpected end to the Portuguese Grand Prix after the good feelings the Italian had had throughout the weekend. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider was relegated in the early laps and was forced to fight his way back into the points. With one lap to go, he managed to break into the top 15 to finish in fourteenth position.

Win Máximo Quiles: “It was a brutal race. From the start, all the riders began pushing hard, but I didn't feel very good at first. Then I had a scare when I almost collided with Joel Kelso, and from that point on, the race became tense. I was able to relax, and in the last part of the race, I felt very good. From the sixth lap onwards, I switched to ‘hammer mode’ and maintained a very consistent pace. I hadn't managed to do that in other races, but this time I said to myself, ‘concentrate and be smooth’. I want to keep this mindset going so I can push hard in the last race and be better prepared for next year.”

14th Dennis Foggia (+29.897): “It wasn't the race I expected after a fairly positive weekend. I had some difficulties in the fast corners and I struggled to hold the line. I scored some points, but it wasn't the position we could have fought for today. We'll analyse the data over the next few days to continue working in Valencia and be able to fight for a good result in the last race of the year.”
