Quiles' eighth podium in a nail-biting finish

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider crossed the finish line in third place, bringing his total to eight podiums in 12+1 races

Máximo Quiles was once again one of the main protagonists in Moto3. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider fought tooth and nail for the podium in a heart-stopping final lap to finish the Japanese Grand Prix in third place. After being in contention for victory in a race in which the rain played an unexpected role, the Spaniard now has eight podiums in the lightweight category. David Muñoz took advantage of the others' hesitations and took a risk to break away from the group in search of his third victory ahead of José Antonio Rueda, who finished second. Dennis Foggia finished in a hard-fought tenth position after starting last due to a penalty.

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team riders completed the Japanese Grand Prix with a demanding race. Máximo Quiles, who started the race from the third row of the grid, made a great start and only needed four laps to take the lead. The Spaniard tried to maintain his position, but the threat of rain and the first drops falling on the Motegi circuit forced him not to take excessive risks in order to stay with the leading group. Halfway through the race, Quiles regained his confidence and returned to the podium spots to tackle the final laps and fight for another trophy. On the last lap, he was involved in an intense battle and had to work hard to hold on and cross the finish line in third place. On the other hand, his teammate Dennis Foggia faced a very different race after having to start from the back of the grid due to a penalty. The Italian, who had a great start to the race, moved up ten positions in the first few laps and took just four laps to get into the points. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider was not satisfied and maintained a high pace to overtake his rivals and move up to tenth position. With these results, Quiles has been able to close the gap on the second-placed rider by 11 points and, with five races to go, is now only 18 points behind Piqueras, while Foggia remains in twelfth in the overall standings.

3rd Máximo Quiles (+2.203): “It was one of the most difficult races. When I saw the rain falling, I knew the track was going to be slippery, but it was hot, so I kept up the pace. Other riders were going super fast and I have very little experience in these conditions, so I relaxed and when the sun came out, I knew it was my time to push. When Rueda overtook me, I didn't know it was the last lap. Perrone also overtook me, everyone was going for it, so it had to be the last lap, no matter what. I defended my position in the chicane and said to myself, ‘I think I've made the podium’. I almost missed out on the podium because I was so focused on the race that I didn't know what lap it was. It was a rookie mistake, but I've learned from it and I'll be more aware of the laps in future races.”

10th Dennis Foggia (+21.113): “It was a positive race. If I hadn't started in last position due to the penalty, I could have been in the front group. I'm happy with the weekend, we worked well and in the end we got a good result. I was able to fight my way back into the top 10 and we've taken a step forward to continue fighting in Indonesia.”
