Quiles avoids Q1 in Barcelona

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team has completed the first day of the Catalan Grand Prix with Máximo Quiles in the top 5, while Dennis Foggia was seventeenth

Máximo Quiles had a positive Friday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and was once again one of the fastest riders in the category. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider finished fifth after suffering a heavy crash in the morning and secured a spot in tomorrow's Q2. His teammate Dennis Foggia, seventeenth, just 76 thousandths off the cut, was not so fortunate and was left out at the last minute. Argentinian Valentín Perrone set the pace at the start of the Grand Prix, with David Muñoz and David Almansa in second and third place respectively. Moto3 leader José Antonio Rueda secured direct passage to Q2 after finishing eighth, more than 5 tenths of a second off the reference time.

The first day of practice took place under high temperatures in Barcelona. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team riders worked this morning on fine-tuning their bikes to qualify for Q2 this afternoon. Máximo Quiles, who comes off his second win of the season in Hungary, was at the top of the standings in the early minutes, but a heavy crash prevented him from finishing the session and he was only able to complete nine laps. In the afternoon, both riders took to the track determined to secure a place in Q2 and fight for the top positions on the grid tomorrow. Quiles and Foggia are aware of the importance of a good start in this weekend's race and have therefore tried to stay in the top fourteen from the outset. The Spanish rider went from strength to strength, regaining his confidence after the crash in the morning, and quickly managed to move into the top five. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider did not want to take too many risks, but he wanted to secure a good starting point for Saturday. In that way, his 1:48.045 put him in fifth position. Dennis Foggia also occupied the Q2 places from the early stages. The Italian rider pushed his options to the limit, but unfortunately, traffic on the track prevented him from improving his time. In a final attempt, he was relegated to seventeenth position with a time of 1:48.403 and tomorrow he will have to go through Q1 despite the good feelings he had throughout the day.

5th Máximo Quiles 1:48.045 (+0.461): “I didn't feel great after this morning's crash, as it was a huge one and I didn't feel as confident in the afternoon. I managed to concentrate and I secured Q2 despite not being at 100%. I set a good time, it wasn't the best, but we achieved our goal. We'll keep working hard so we can have a good qualifying session tomorrow.”

17th Dennis Foggia 1:48.403 (+0.819): “I'm a bit disappointed with today's result because we had the potential to get into Q2. The group was very large and several riders got in my way, so I wasn't able to do a good lap. I had the speed and it was very close, but I have a good feeling that I can do well in qualifying and in the race. The championship isn't over yet and we can still fight for a victory.”
