The CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team rider will start from the front row for the third time this season, after finishing one tenth off the fastest time
Máximo Quiles has secured a spot on the front row of the grid at the Aragon Grand Prix after having to go through Q1. The CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team rider finished third and also fought for first place on a solid Saturday for the Moto3 rookie. His teammate Dennis Foggia will have to fight his way back after missing out on Q2 and will start from the seventh row, in nineteenth place. Moto3 leader José Antonio Rueda secured his third pole position of the season, with Italian Luca Lunetta in second place.
The Aragon Grand Prix did not start as expected for the CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team riders, who were unable to secure direct entry into Q2 on the previous day. Máximo Quiles and Dennis Foggia had a clear goal for Saturday and continued to work hard with the team to be in contention for the front positions of the grid. Earlier, in the morning, Quiles and Foggia took advantage of the session to work towards the race, in which high temperatures and tyre management will be key factors. In Q1, the CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team riders worked as a team to achieve a good time and secure one of the four places that give access to Q2. Máximo Quiles took first place, while his teammate Foggia was fifth, just 83 thousandths off the cut-off, after occupying Q2 positions throughout the session. The Italian will therefore start the race from nineteenth position. In Q2, Quiles took to the track determined to return to the front row. The Moto3 rookie completed a very satisfactory qualifying session, quickly moving into the top three. The Spaniard remained among the leaders and continued to improve his times, lapping in 1:56 for the first time this weekend. Quiles even fought for pole position, although at the last minute he found himself out of the top three. The CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team rider did not give up and, after a great final lap, regained third position to return to the front row for the third time in just four races.
3rd Máximo Quiles 1:56.505: "We saved the day after failing to get direct entry into Q2 yesterday. I made a mistake, a bit like at Silverstone, and I was angry, but today I came out determined to find a good pace in the morning. In Q1 I tried to set a good fast time, but without getting overconfident, because you can quickly find yourself out of the running. I'm very happy because we did it and I felt explosive. I surprised myself by achieving this time. We were close to pole position and I'm looking forward to tomorrow's race."
19th Dennis Foggia 1:57.906: "In the end, we couldn't get the time right; we needed to do a few more laps in 1:57. This morning we didn't change tyres and did all the free practice with used ones, riding a second slower than in the afternoon. At the beginning I was lacking a bit of reference and maybe we were a couple of tenths short of getting through to Q2. The race is tomorrow, I feel good and I'm strong on the brakes, although it will be tough because we're going to notice the tyre wear. I did twenty laps with the same tyre, the race is seventeen laps, but from the seventh onwards you can really feel it going down. I think it will be a group race and we can do well."
