Match point in Japan

CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso extends his World Championship lead to 97 points after winning from the second row in Indonesia

Qatar, Americas, France, Catalonia, Italy, Germany, Austria, Emilia – Romagna and, now, Indonesia. CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso has scored his ninth victory of the year at the Indonesian GP, a victory that gives him the first chance to mathematically seal the Moto3 title next weekend in Japan. The Indonesian GP did not start in the best way for the World Championship leader, but Alonso has managed to turn it around in the best possible way. Alonso, who has started from fifth position, has always been in the leading group, which has been made of up to ten riders. The poleman, Iván Ortolá, has not been in that group, as he has had to complete three long lap penalties. During the first part of the race, Collin Veijer has led, until he has crashed with nine laps to go. The rest of the riders in the group have fought an intense battle for the top nine positions, a fight in which they could go from leading to closing the pack in the blink of an eye. In fact, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider was in seventh position. However, once again, Alonso has shown his magic in the final stages. Little by little he has moved up to the front positions and, in the last lap, he has overtaken Adrián Fernández and David Muñoz to take the lead. In the final metres, the Colombian has given his rivals no chance and has added Mandalika to his list of victories, thus becoming the rider with most victories in the Moto3 history, tied with Romano Fenati. Fernández and Muñoz have completed the podium, while Alonso's rivals in the World Championship have finished further back: Dani Holgado has been sixth and Iván Ortolá, ninth.

After the win in Indonesia, Alonso has extended his World Championship lead to 97 points over his closest rival, Holgado; to 105 over the third, Ortolá, and to 107 over the fourth, Veijer. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider will be able to mathematically seal the title in Motegi if he scores three points more than Holgado and does not lose more than five to Ortolá and more than seven to Veijer.

His teammate Joel Esteban has had a great race at the Indonesian GP and has crossed the finish line in fourteenth position in his first time in Mandalika. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has started from twenty-second and, after four laps, he was already in fourteenth place. From that moment on, Esteban has been involved in a great fight for the last positions in the points zone with a very large group of riders. The Spanish has given his all until the end to score two valuable points, thus fulfilling one of his objectives for the weekend.

WIN David Alonso: “There has been a moment in the race when, between the heat, the fact that I had no speed and that I was losing a lot in one sector, my head was asking me to finish fifth or sixth, score points and think about Japan. However, I had to do it, for myself, for my people, for all of us who are fighting to achieve the objective. That has given me the strength to not give up in the last laps and to give a little more. I had not planned to win, today was very complicated. I settle for a top 3 finish.”

14th Joel Esteban (+17.244): “I have taken more risks than I should have at the start and I have worn out the tyres quite a bit, which has cost me a lot in the last laps. I have to improve in practice and in qualifying, because I am not getting good results there. That penalises me in the race because I start from very far back and, in the first laps, I struggle to overtake, the group breaks up and I cannot get to the front positions.”
