David Alonso has finished thirteenth after a heavy crash in the morning. His teammate Joel Esteban has ended in seventeenth position
With no time to rest after the Emilia - Romagna GP, Moto3 has returned to action with the Indonesian GP, a weekend that has not started in the best way for CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso. In the first practice session, the World Championship leader has crashed at turn 4, something that has affected the rest of his day. After the crash, the Colombian has been able to recover the bike and return to the track. However, he has had to go to the medical centre, where after a check-up he has been declared fit by the doctors. This check-up has delayed his return to the garaje and, when he has arrived, the first session had already finished. Despite this, he has ended with the ninth best time, nine tenths off the fastest rider, the rookie Ángel Piqueras. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has got back on the bike in the second session, although he has taken his time and has only completed eleven laps. Alonso has only been able to set the thirteenth best time of the day and has finished again nine tenths off the fastest, Collin Veijer this time. The Dutch has set a time of 1:37.942, a register with which he has lowered by eight tenths the track record, held by Jaume Masià since last season. Adrián Fernández has been second, just 154 off Veijer, while David Almansa has been third, two tenths off. Despite having had a difficult Friday, Alonso is in provisional Q2 positions and is already thinking about the aspects he can improve tomorrow to get a good result in qualifying.
His teammate Joel Esteban has made a good start in Mandalika. The rookie has set the nineteenth best time in the morning, while in the afternoon he has finished seventeenth and has closed the gap to the fastest by two tenths from one session to the other. Esteban has finished just 270 thousandths off the provisional positions for Q2, a goal he still has the opportunity to achieve tomorrow in the last practice session before qualifying. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider is satisfied with the work he has done on the first day in Indonesia and will work to continue improving during the rest of the weekend.
12+1 David Alonso 1:38.872 (+0.930): “Today I have had a hard crash because I have lost the front and, almost at the same time, I have also lost the rear. It has been a hard blow that I did not expect. My side hurt a little, but it has not bothered me on the bike. My shoulder hurts, especially when braking hard. The good thing is that, as I have warmed up, lap by lap, it has improved. We have taken it easy in the second practice session, we have waited a long time in the box and we have gone out at the end with new tyres. Tomorrow we will try to do a normal practice session, with a lot of laps on the track, which is what we have lacked today. When I have made the last attempt, behind some riders, I have realised that we still have several things to improve. Also, we are not used to these conditions, there is a lot of humidity and we have to adapt little by little.”
17th Joel Esteban 1:39.145 (+1.203): “I am happy with today. We have had a very solid day. I have regained the confidence I had before Misano and I have felt more comfortable on the bike. We have focused on understanding the track. I have not been able to complete a good fast lap because I have made some mistakes and that is an area I need to improve. We are going to work to see where we have failed and try to take a step forward that would allow us to go straight into Q2. It is very hot and the fatigue is more noticeable than in Europe.”
