Indian rain complicates Gaviota GASGAS Aspar's work

Yamanaka and Alonso will start from eleventh and seventeenth place after a Q2 that has been disputed in the wet due to a heavy storm that has started just a few minutes before the session

Jaume Masià has taken the first ever pole position at the Indian Grand Prix for the first time in history after a session that has been completed in the wet. A heavy rainstorm over the Buddh International Circuit just before the start of Q2 has complicated the track conditions. None of the riders had any information about this track in the wet, but in spite of that, they have gone out to fight for pole position. Matteo Bertelle and Ayumu Sasaki will start behind Masià, completing the front row of the grid. World Championship leader, Dani Holgado, has had a difficult day in India. The Spanish has had to go through Q1 after crashing in the last practice. Holgado had set the second fastest time of the session, but his best lap has been cancelled and he will have to start the race from eighteenth place. Another title contender, Deniz Öncü, will begin from the back of the grid and will have to serve a penalty in the race after being penalised for ignoring a black flag that required him to stop in the garage in the morning practice. With this situation, Masià and Sasaki will have a great opportunity to take the lead, which is in Holgado’s hands since the first race in Portugal.

The rain in India has complicated the work for the Gaviota GASGAS Aspar riders. Ryusei Yamanaka and David Alonso will start tomorrow's race from eleventh and seventeenth position, respectively. The Japanese has competed in Q1 in dry conditions and has been able to access Q2 after setting the third fastest time of the session in his last lap. In Q2 and with the track in difficult conditions, Yamanaka has got a time of 2:11.330 that allows him to start from the fourth row, while his teammate David Alonso will do it from the sixth. The Colombian has suffered because of his short experience on the Moto3 bike in the wet and will be looking to come back tomorrow if the weather improves.

11th Ryusei Yamanaka 2:11.330 (+1.994): “I've never ridden in wet conditions on this track before. At the beginning I have been careful because I didn't know how much grip the track had, but I have finished with a good feeling. At the end I have tried to push a bit harder, but I have crashed. In Q1 I have felt comfortable with the bike. It has been a difficult session because I couldn't set a good time, but on the last lap I have concentrated on myself and I have achieved it.”

17th David Alonso 2:14.408 (+5.072): “Qualifying has been in the wet and we still need to work more in these conditions. The track was tricky and I have not had confidence. For the future we will try to improve on this aspect. Tomorrow we'll have fun in the race if it's dry, and if it's wet, I'll have another chance to keep learning.”
