Foggia finishes eighth on an eventful Friday at Assen

The Italian rider secured direct entry into tomorrow's Q2 on a day marked by mixed conditions for the Moto3 riders

The Dutch Grand Prix kicked off on Friday with the first practice sessions of the weekend. The weather has been unpredictable at the TT Circuit Assen, and the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team faced very different conditions throughout the day. Dennis Foggia secured direct entry into Q2 after finishing in eighth position, while Máximo Quiles will have to go through Q1 on Saturday. The Spanish rider finished in twentieth in a session in which Luca Lunetta set the pace in Moto3 with a lead of more than two tenths over second-placed Joel Kelso. David Muñoz completed the top three in third place.

This morning's free practice session began in wet conditions for the riders in the lightweight category. Máximo Quiles tackled the first laps on the Dutch track with good feelings despite the tricky track conditions, which affected riding, although the winner of the last round at Mugello was able to set the second fastest time of the morning. His teammate, on the other hand, lagged behind at the bottom of the standings in a session interrupted by track conditions after several crashes. In the afternoon session, the roles were reversed, and this time it was Dennis Foggia who had the best feeling within the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team ranks. With Q2 in mind, the Moto3 riders took to the track on slick tyres, although the asphalt temperatures were still low. The Italian remained among the top fourteen until the final laps and, after briefly dropping out of the Q2 positions, completed a great final lap to climb to eighth place with a time of 1:40.633, half a second off the fastest time. On the other hand, Máximo Quiles was also consistent in the afternoon practice, although he did not feel great about his riding. The Spaniard also remained in the Q2 positions and, like his teammate, was left out in the final minutes. However, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider was unable to put together a perfect final lap and his 1:41.012 placed him in twentieth position, forcing him to compete in Q1 tomorrow to secure a good starting position.

8th Dennis Foggia 1:40.633 (+0.580): “We made it through to Q2, which was our first goal for the weekend. I feel better and better with every race. After Mugello, I've got a weight off my mind. I was just a few tenths short on the last lap to make it into the top 5. I'm happy, we have to work to improve in some areas and tomorrow we will focus on the morning free practice to perfect our race pace. I want to thank the team for all the work they are doing.”

20th Máximo Quiles 1:41.012 (+0.959): “The feeling was good this morning, I love this circuit and I was really eager to get out there from the start. However, I'm not feeling completely comfortable, I can't do everything I want with the bike. There isn't much grip and I can't enter the corners as I would like to. I need to improve some aspects of my riding, and tomorrow we'll take advantage of the free practice to find those feelings that I'm missing. The positive thing is that, by going through Q1, we have an extra fifteen minutes to improve. It's on days like this that we can learn and improve the most. This afternoon we'll continue working with the team, and tomorrow we'll go out motivated and focused on getting through to Q2.”
