Máximo Quiles and Dennis Foggia will have to fight their way up the field in tomorrow's race after finishing tenth and thirteenth respectively
The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team faced a demanding qualifying session at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Máximo Quiles set the tenth fastest time and will start tomorrow's race from the fourth row, while his teammate Dennis Foggia will do it from the fifth row after making it through Q2. The Moto3 pole position at the Catalan Grand Prix was achieved by Spaniard David Almansa, two tenths of a second ahead of second and third place, which on this occasion went to Australian Joel Kelso and Spanish Ángel Piqueras.
The Catalan Grand Prix ended the day with intense qualifying sessions for the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team. The Moto3 riders fine-tuned the last details in this morning's free practice session to prepare for a race that promises to be intense from start to finish. Dennis Foggia improved on his times from Friday and finished in the top 10, while Máximo Quiles ended the session without setting a time. The Moto3 rookie suffered another crash and was able to return to the track, but unfortunately his laps were cancelled for exceeding the track limits. In the afternoon, Máximo Quiles competed in Q2 in search of a good time despite having ridden less than his rivals due to the two crashes he suffered over the weekend. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider set his best time of the weekend, a 1:47.410, which was only good enough for tenth place on tomorrow's starting grid, half a second off pole position. Meanwhile, Dennis Foggia made it through Q1 in Barcelona to be in contention for the front spots. The Italian rider also set his best time despite the high temperatures on Saturday, but his 1:47.667 relegated him to thirteenth place. This means that the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team will have to make a good start tomorrow, but both riders are confident and feeling good about tackling the 18 laps of Sunday's race.
10th Máximo Quiles 147.410 (+0.533): “It's not the position I wanted, but it was a difficult qualifying session. There was a lot of traffic and a lot of slipstreaming, so it was difficult to do a good lap. I didn't position myself well and I couldn't do the lap I would have liked. Tomorrow I'll have to fight back a little more from the start and push more.”
12+1 Dennis Foggia 1:47.667 (+0.790): “The most positive thing is that, even though I'm starting from thirteenth, we're all very close together. There was a lot of traffic on the track again and it was difficult to set a good time. It's a shame, but I have a good feeling. Tomorrow it will be important to get off to a good start and have a good race. It will be very long, but I think we can be at the front.”
