The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar rider has achieved his seventh victory of the year and leads by 71 points
CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso has returned to the top of the podium in the Austrian GP after completing a great comeback. Alonso has achieved his seventh victory of the year and has extended his lead in a race that has been very close until the chequered flag. The Moto3 race has been exciting from the start, when the poleman, Iván Ortolá, has had a problem with his bike and has had to start from the pit lane. At the start, Alonso, who was sixth on the grid, has climbed up to third. However, on the third lap he has had to complete a long lap penalty and has gone down to tenth place. This has not been a problem for the World Championship leader, who from that moment on has imposed his pace to try to catch up with the group ahead that had escaped. Alonso has soon arrived in the front positions and has maintained an intense battle in a group of eight riders. With six laps to go, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has overtaken Collin Veijer to take the lead and has resisted his rivals’ attacks to maintain the first position until the end. The fight for the other two podium places has been decided on the finish line, as David Muñoz has ended just five thousandths ahead of Dani Holgado. Alonso has added the Red Bull Ring to his list of victories and has removed the thorn from last year, a race in which he crashed when he was leading. In addition, with this victory, the young Colombian has extended his advantage to 71 points over the second-placed rider in the World Championship, Ortolá, who has only managed to finish ninth.
His teammate Joel Esteban has finished the Austrian GP twenty-fifth. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider, who has started from eighteenth position, has competed sore after the heavy crash he had yesterday during the final free practice session. Despite this, Esteban has not thrown in the towel and has fought until the end. The rookie already has his mind set on the next race in Aragón, where he hopes to be at 100% to fight for points again.
WIN David Alonso: “I knew it was not going to be easy, but I saw the possibility of winning. Today we had to go lap by lap and focus on our pace. Once I have completed the long lap penalty, I had to go little by little, always ride in the same tenth and not make mistakes. I have gone at 95% and corner by corner I have caught up them.”
25th Joel Esteban (+30.457): “The race has been difficult; I was not in my best condition. I have not felt comfortable and I have not been able to replicate the times I achieved yesterday before the crash. We have to keep working and we are now focused on Aragón."
