Máximo Quiles and Dennis Foggia reached the fifth and sixth fastest times of the day
CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team completed a very tight qualifying session at the Brno circuit. Máximo Quiles and Dennis Foggia fought for the front row of the grid until the last seconds and tomorrow they will start the Czech Grand Prix race from the second row of the grid after finishing fifth and sixth respectively. Both riders ended just one tenth off the reference time, which on Saturday was set by Guido Pini. The Italian broke the current track record and secured his first pole position in Moto3, ahead of category leader José Antonio Rueda and David Muñoz, second and third respectively and separated by just a few thousandths.
The second day at Brno began in dry conditions and the Moto3 riders took to the track to fine-tune their bikes ahead of the afternoon's qualifying session. Máximo Quiles maintained the lead during part of this morning's free practice, while his teammate Dennis Foggia also occupied the top positions. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team riders finished the session in third and fourth place, making it clear that they would be two of the candidates to occupy the front row of the grid after also securing direct passage to Q2 yesterday. In the afternoon session, the Spanish rider was once again riding alone and was quickly able to secure a place in the front rows. Quiles continued to improve his times and focused on securing his second pole position of the season. In a final attempt, the Moto3 rookie set his best time of the weekend, a 2:05.175, which put him in fifth place, just +0.156 off pole position. His teammate took advantage of his experience on the Czech circuit and improved on his Friday times by more than a second. The Italian came close to equalling his best qualifying result with the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team and finished in sixth, +0.013 behind his teammate. However, the penalty that David Muñoz received yesterday for riding slowly on the track will force him to start the race from last position, meaning Máximo Quiles and Dennis Foggia move up one place on the starting grid and will be fourth and fifth respectively.
5th Máximo Quiles 2:05.175 (+0.156): “I'm happy because I was very strong riding alone, without any references or slipstreams. I feel like we've taken another step forward and I'm looking forward to the race. On the last lap, I could have taken pole position, but I got nervous and I made mistakes on some corners and when downshifting. I've learned not to make these mistakes in the next qualifying sessions. We need to improve a couple of things on the bike and in my riding, but we're ready for tomorrow.”
6th Dennis Foggia 2:05.188 (+0.169): “I'm very happy with qualifying. We had a chance to be on the front row, but we're all very close together and we ended just one tenth off pole position. If I had taken better advantage of the slipstream, I could have been in contention for the pole position, but I'm very satisfied with the result. We're improving in every session, which is important for a good race tomorrow.”
