David Alonso will start from tenth position on the grid, while his teammate Joel Esteban will start from twenty-first
CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team will have to fight to come back tomorrow in the Australian GP race after a difficult qualifying in Phillip Island. The weather has once again marked the day: in the morning, the riders in the lightweight category have ridden on a wet track, while in qualifying they finally have found a dry track, although the wind has made things difficult. In the last practice session before qualifying, Alonso has been once again competitive in the wet and has managed to get straight into Q2 after finishing with the second best time, despite a crash. The world champion has not wanted to waste time in qualifying and as soon as the traffic light has gone green, he has gone out on track to accumulate kilometres in the dry and on his own. In his first run, Alonso has only set the fifteenth best time after completing a lap in 1:37.800. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has been able to improve his register in his second run to 1:36.602, but that time only allows him to start tomorrow from tenth place on the grid. The Colombian has suffered in dry conditions, especially when stopping the bike, but he is confident that he can progress and fight to score his eleventh victory of the season. Iván Ortolá has been the fastest and has achieved his third consecutive pole after setting a time of 1:35.872. Ortolá has finished 124 thousandths ahead of Collin Veijer, who will start from second position, and 151 ahead of Adrián Fernández, who will complete the front row.
CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider Joel Esteban will start tomorrow from the twenty-first position on the grid. The Spanish has finished with the sixteenth best time in the last practice session after a crash, which has meant he has had to compete in Q1. In this session, Esteban has set the seventh best time, a result that has not been enough to get into Q2. As a result, he will have to fight tomorrow from the seventh row on the grid. Esteban, who had been competitive throughout the weekend in wet conditions, has not felt as comfortable in the dry and has been unable to complete a good lap. This afternoon he will work on the set up of the bike to improve his feeling and be able to make a comeback in tomorrow's race.
10th David Alonso 1:36.602: “Today we have started in the rain, conditions in which I feel more and more comfortable every time. We have done the qualifying in the dry and it has been quite difficult. I have not felt comfortable with the bike, it is difficult for me to turn it. More than riding, I was fighting with everything. It has been hard for me. I have tried to work on my pace alone instead of looking for a reference. Tomorrow we will learn in the race.”
21st Joel Esteban 1:37.971: “I am not happy with Q1. We have ridden in dry conditions for the first time and it has been difficult. Also, it was very windy. Little by little I have adapted to the new conditions, but I have made a mistake. I have lost a lot of time trying to find a reference instead of riding alone to continue learning the track and get a good time. We have to work for tomorrow to better understand the track. I think the race will be in a group and if we get a good set up, we can have a good time.”
