Back-to-back podiums for rookie Quiles at the Aragon Grand Prix

The CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team rider had his best race of the season and finished in second place after fighting for victory until the finish line

Fifty thousandths separated Máximo Quiles from his first Moto3 victory. The CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team rider put in a great performance in one of the toughest races of the season to secure his second consecutive podium, his second in just four races. With this second place, the Spanish rookie closes the gap in the race for the best rookie of the year, with Álvaro Carpe taking third. David Muñoz took his first Moto3 victory, while category leader José Antonio Rueda finished eighth.

The Aragon Grand Prix offered an exciting race in the lightweight category, in which tyre choice and their management were key to complete the 17 laps. Máximo Quiles started the race from the front row of the grid and, after a good start, moved into second place. The CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team rider remained in the top three, following the leader and preventing him from widening the gap on the rest of the field. After the first half of the race, Quiles lost a few positions, although he remained in the leading group at all times. Despite being a rookie, the Spanish rider demonstrated great maturity in time management and knew how to choose the right moment to make up positions after falling to seventh place. With just five laps remaining, the lead changed hands, and Quiles returned to the podium positions, even leading at times. On the final lap, the Moto3 rider tried to overtake his rival, maintaining all his options until the final metres, and Quiles was just fifty thousandths of a second away from his first world championship victory. With this second position, he achieved his second consecutive podium, which is also his second of the season. Meanwhile, his teammate Dennis Foggia was unable to complete the race he expected at one of his favourite circuits. The Italian CFMOTO Viel Aspar Team rider did not have a good feeling in a complicated race and tried to reach the points positions after starting from the back of the grid. In the final laps, Foggia rode alone in a race in which the pace dropped as the laps passed, and he finished in sixteenth position. With these results, Quiles is eighth in the Moto3 overall standings with 60 points, while Foggia is thirteenth with 33 points.

2nd Máximo Quiles (+0.050): “I felt very strong over the last two laps, and I tried to open up a bit of a gap to break away from the group. I knew they were going to try to overtake me on the last corner, so I was thinking about where to let Muñoz pass so I could try to do it myself. The reference point on the last corner is different depending on whether you're first or second, so I braked hard, but the bike bounced back a bit. I was close to taking the win in a very difficult race. It's my second consecutive podium in my first year in Moto3, so I'm very happy. I hope to finish it off at the next race in Mugello; they say the third time's a charm, but now we're going to enjoy this moment. We're strong, and I'm feeling very good with the bike. I'm fighting with riders who have a lot of experience; I feel stronger all the time, so we have to keep going like this.”

16th Dennis Foggia (+15.449): “It wasn't a good race for me. I wasn't feeling well and couldn't do what I wanted. I was struggling to ride; it was the bike that was carrying me and not the other way around. I want to thank the whole team for their work over the weekend. We'll keep pushing and giving our best in Italy.”
