The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has become Moto3 World Champion after achieving his tenth victory of the year in Japan
October 6, 2024 is a date that CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso will never forget, as he has written his name in gold letters in the history of motorcycling. The Colombian has been crowned Moto3 World Champion at the Japanese GP, a title he has achieved as champions like to do it, with a win. Alonso, who has started from third position, has overtaken Collin Veijer to take second place in the first few metres, behind the poleman Iván Ortolá. However, Alonso has taken it easy in the first laps. The young Colombian has always remained in the first group, but he has gone down to seventh position. Ahead, Adrián Fernández has taken the lead of the race and has set a great pace. With nine laps to go, Alonso has begun to make progress in order to regain positions. Among the riders he has overtaken were two of his main rivals in the fight for the title: Dani Holgado and Iván Ortolá. With five laps to go before the chequered flag, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider was already in second position. Alonso has soon overtaken Fernández to take the lead and thus head towards his tenth victory of the season, the victory that has allowed him to win the World Championship with four races to go. This title is the fourth that Alonso has won with the Aspar Team, after winning the Spanish 85GP Championship in 2018, the European Talent Cup in 2020 and the Red Bull Rookies Cup in 2021. Alonso has also opened the CFMOTO title list, achieving the first World Championship for a Chinese manufacturer. With today's victory in Japan, the Colombian has entered the record books by becoming the rider with most victories in Moto3 history, after overtaking Romano Fenati. In addition, he has equalled Joan Mir as the rider with the most victories in a single season in Moto3. Veijer and Fernández have completed the podium in Motegi, while Ortolá has crashed on the penultimate lap.
CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider Joel Esteban has finished the Japanese GP in fifteenth place. Esteban has started from nineteenth position and, in the race, he has gradually gained positions until he has reached the points zone. The Spanish has been very competitive in the first half of the race, but in the last laps he has not felt comfortable with the used tyres, which has prevented him from continuing to progress. With fifteenth position in Motegi, the young rookie is once again scoring points on a track he was not familiar with.
VICTORY David Alonso: “I wanted to be champion by winning the race, I was sure about that. I could not imagine my perfect dream in any other way than winning. I have crossed the finish line and I could not believe it. I thought that on the last lap I had exceeded the track limits and I did not want to celebrate it before time. When they have started congratulating me, I have asked them if I was really the champion. I could not believe it. I have been very calm all weekend, but yesterday afternoon I started to have some doubts. I want to thank my team, CFMOTO, my sponsors and all the people who have helped me get here, because without them I would not have been able to fulfil my dream.”
15th Joel Esteban (+13.294): “I am satisfied with today’s race. I have had fun, especially in the first laps when I have been able to overtake several riders. In the last laps I have suffered a bit, because I was not comfortable with the used tyres. We know what we have to do to continue improving. I don't have to put pressure on myself, I have to ride as I know and have fun. If I had done that from the beginning of the weekend, I would have been faster. Now it is time to rest and continue working to prepare for the next triple-header."
