The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has claimed his eighth victory of the season and now has an 82-points lead in the World Championship
CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso arrived in Misano with the aim of making up for the race here two weeks ago and that is what he has done. Alonso has won the Emilia - Romagna GP after a thrilling final lap. The World Championship leader has maintained second position at the start and has even led the race in the first laps. However, the battle for podium places has been a constant exchange of positions between a large group of riders, which has meant that Alonso has even ridden in fifth position. With eleven laps to go, Alonso has overtaken Dani Holgado to take the lead. From that moment on, the Colombian has imposed his pace to try to break the group and he has done so, although three other riders have followed him: Dani Holgado, Ángel Piqueras and Collin Veijer. Despite the fact that the gap between these four riders were minimal, the positions have remained stable until the penultimate lap, when Holgado and Piqueras have overtaken Alonso. However, Alonso had not yet said his last word. On the last lap, he has completed a masterful double overtake to regain first position and thus achieve victory. Piqueras has finished second and, behind him, Holgado had crossed the finish line third, but he has exceeded the track limits on the last lap and he has been penalized with dropping a position, so it has been Veijer who has climbed to the third step of the podium.
In Misano, Alonso has achieved his eighth win in fourteen races, a victory with which he has increased his World Championship lead to 82 points over Holgado and Veijer, who are tied. Iván Ortolá, who has finished fifth, now occupies fourth position, 87 points behind the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider.
His teammate Joel Esteban has finished the Emilia - Romagna GP in twentieth position. Esteban has started from the eighth row of the grid and, from the start, he has been very competitive. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has been involved in an intense battle for much of the race with Jacob Roulstone and Xabi Zurutuza. With four laps to go, Esteban has received a long lap penalty after exceeding the track limits and, after serving it, he has gone down to twenty-first position. Despite this, the rookie has fought until the end and has crossed the finish line in twentieth place.
WIN David Alonso: “Today I have approached the race with a different mentality. I have had a few difficult races because I have found it difficult to control my thoughts, perhaps I was thinking too much about the results, I was overlooking some details and I was not one hundred percent focused. Today I just have gone out to do my job well and try to have a good pace, without thinking about the victory. The race has been very close, with a very tight finish. The rest of the riders are reaching their maximum level and everything is getting complicated.”
20th Joel Esteban (+30.811): “It has been another difficult weekend, but this time we have been closer. We have worked better and we have understood many things. I am satisfied with the work I have done with the team. I am not happy with the result of the race, because my objective was to fight for the points.”
