Alonso to fight for his twelfth victory from the second row

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider will start the Thai GP from fifth position

CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso will fight for his twelfth victory of the season from the second row of the grid. Alonso, who was fastest on the first day in Buriram, has not improved his time in the last practice session, but his lap from free practice 1 has been enough to get him into Q2. In the qualifying session, he has set the best time on his first good lap, although the rookie Ángel Piqueras has improved it instantly following his wheel. The Colombian has returned to the pits to put new tyres and make a second attempt. However, he has been unable to complete it as when he has crossed the finish line to start his last flying lap, the chequered flag was already waving. Many riders have waited in the garages for the champion to come out in order to follow his reference, so they have also been unable to complete a final attempt. In the end, Alonso has ended in fifth position, three tenths off the best time, set by Joel Kelso. The Australian has achieved the first pole of his Moto3 career after beating Collin Veijer by 73 thousandths, while Piqueras will complete the front row of the grid.

CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider Joel Esteban will start tomorrow from the sixth row of the grid after having made it through to Q2. The rookie has finished the final practice in nineteenth place, so he has had to compete in Q1. In this session, Esteban has set the third best time, a result that has allowed him to get into Q2, thus fulfilling one of his objectives for the weekend. The Spanish has finished with the eighteenth best time and tomorrow he will fight to make a great start that allows him to recover positions and be able to fight with the leading group.

5th David Alonso 1:40.959 (+0.356): “Today I have been more concentrated in preparing for tomorrow's race than in qualifying. I have focused on working on the tyre in critical situations instead of going for the record. The qualifying session is simply to get you on the grid and I have taken it easy. The temperature tomorrow will be quite high and we will have to be very aware of the tyre degradation, especially in the last few laps. Everything is very tight and I think we will fight in a big group. The key will be to see if we can make a difference at the end. We will try, but it will be difficult.”

18th Joel Esteban 1:42.669 (+2.066): “I am happy with today. We have taken another step forward and we have gone through to Q2. Now I have to work because I am still losing time in the last sector. Tomorrow will be a fast race, I will try to do a good start and regain positions in the first few metres."
