Alonso, outstanding also in the wet

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has finished second on the first day in the Australian GP

The Australian GP is the first that CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso faces as world champion, but, despite arriving with his homework done, the Colombian has not relaxed. Alonso has finished second on the first day in Phillip Island, a first day that has been marked by the rain. The weather in Phillip Island is always unpredictable and often conditions the GP, as it has been the case today. The first session of the day has been carried out with the track completely wet and, in these conditions, Alonso has set the pace. The Colombian has completed a lap in 1:44.888, 18 thousandths ahead of the second, Ángel Piqueras. In the afternoon session, conditions have improved, the sun has come out and the asphalt has gradually dried out, but not enough to put dry tyres. Alonso and Piqueras have been once again the fastest in the second practice session, this time with Piqueras ahead, but without improving on the times from the morning. The rookie has set a time of 1:44:949, while Alonso has ended second, one second behind. Adrián Fernández has completed the top 3 after finishing more than a second off Alonso's time.

CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider Joel Esteban has not had an easy first day in Phillip Island. Despite being a debut on a wet track, Esteban has been able to adapt quickly to the conditions and be competitive. The Spanish has finished the first day on the Australian track with the fourteenth best time, a result that puts him in provisional Q2 positions. Esteban is satisfied with the work done, although he knows that he still has room for improvement. Tomorrow, he hopes to be able to ride in dry conditions to continue making progress.

2nd David Alonso 1:45.991 (+1.042): “I am not under any pressure, but you have to be very careful not to lose concentration. Now it is easy to relax and crash, because you don't pay much attention to the details, so you have to be very focused. I have really enjoyed the two sessions today, I want to have fun in my last races in Moto3. Here in Australia, we ride really fast. In the morning, we have gone out on a wet track, but we have been able to push because the grip was very good. The track has improved a lot compared to last year. In the afternoon, it has been more complicated because the track was not suitable for dry or wet tyres and we have had to be more precise.”

14th Joel Esteban 1:48.229 (+3.280): “I really liked the track. I would have liked to ride in the dry, but it has still been a good day. In the first session, with a lot of rain on the track, I have felt good, but I didn't have a good feeling in the braking. In the second session the track has dried out and, although we have made some changes, I have struggled a bit with the rear. I hope to be able to ride in the dry tomorrow and enjoy it more.”
