The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar rider has not been allowed to fight for victory until the end of the San Marino GP after being hit twice by another rider on the last lap
CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider David Alonso has finished the San Marino GP in seventh position after fighting for victory until the last lap. The World Championship leader, who had started from pole position, has taken the first laps calmy, has tried to manage his tyres and has dropped back to fifth position. Ahead of him, Iván Ortolá and Dani Holgado, who had taken the lead, have opened a gap and have managed to distance themselves from their pursuers by more than a second and a half. However, that difference has not been a problem for Alonso. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has climbed to third position on the fifth lap and has managed to close the gap. Behind him, Taiyo Furusato and Joel Kelso have also arrived, turning the leading group into a five-man peloton that has engaged in an intense battle for podium positions. This fight has allowed Ángel Piqueras, who had served a double long lap penalty, and Collin Veijer to catch up. The final lap has been heart-stopping, with a constant exchange of positions and overtaking at the limit. Alonso was always among the leaders until, on the last lap, Ortolá has hit him twice and, as a result, he has gone down to sixth position. In addition, on that last lap, the Colombian has exceeded the track limits and has been demoted one position, which is why he has finally finished seventh. The victory has been decided on the finish line. Ángel Piqueras has achieved his first World Championship win after beating Dani Holgado by 35 thousandths.
After the San Marino GP, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has a 70-point lead over the second, Dani Holgado. With second place in Misano, the Spanish rider has overtaken in the standings both Veijer and Ortolá, who are now tied with 73 points off Alonso.
His teammate Joel Esteban has not had an easy weekend in Misano and has finished the race in twenty-second position. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has made a mistake in the first corner and has gone off the track, after an incident between José Antonio Rueda, Ricardo Rossi and David Muñoz. Esteban has been able to get back on track, but has gone down to last place. From that moment on, the rookie has fought to close the gap with his rivals and recover positions. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team is already thinking about the next race in Misano, in two weeks, in which both Alonso and Esteban will fight to forget today's results.
7th David Alonso (+0.596): “I have taken it easy at the start, but when I have seen that two riders were getting away, I have pushed hard to gradually make up the difference. In the last few laps, in my opinion, there have been actions that were beyond the limits.”
22nd Joel Esteban (+43.960): “We have had a pretty complicated weekend and I have not been able to fix it in the race. I have made a mistake on the first lap and have gone off the track, so I have had to complete the race on my own. We have to reflect on these last few weekends and work to get back to the level we were at a few races ago.”
