The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has suffered in the final part of the race in Portugal with tyre degradation
Daniel Holgado has taken the victory in the Portuguese Grand Prix after a tight fight until the end. The Spanish rider, who is the new Moto3 leader, has crossed the finish line just 44 thousandths of a second ahead of second-placed Jose Antonio Rueda. Iván Ortolá has completed the podium in the second round of the World Championship. Holgado, Rueda and CFMOTO Aspar Team rider David Alonso have fought a great battle for the victory during most of the race. Rueda, who has started from pole position, has led the early laps, but with nine laps to go Alonso has taken the lead and he has tried to open up a gap at the front. However, the degradation of the tyres has prevented the Colombian rider from staying in front and has complicated the final stages of the race. Alonso has been unable to keep up with his rivals in the battle for the podium and final he has finished fourth, a result with which he is satisfied.
Joel Esteban has crossed the finish line in eighth position. The Spanish rider has made a great start and has moved up five positions to start the race with the leading group. Esteban, who has finished as the best rookie, has fulfilled his objective for this race by finishing in the top ten. With this result, Alonso leaves Portugal in second place in the World Championship, seven points behind the leader, while Esteban is in tenth position as the first rookie.
4th David Alonso (+2.218): "I have tried to push hard to try to get away in the middle of the race, but we have put the rear soft tyre and in the final part of the race the grip has not been the same. The last few laps have been very hard for me, it has been very difficult to stay on the bike. Maybe I have not done the right thing by pushing so hard in the middle of the race, I have to learn from this. In these conditions, finishing fourth is very good."
8th Joel Esteban (+5.430): "I'm very happy with the second race of the season. I have finished eighth and I have achieved my goal, which was to finish in the top ten. We have finished very close to the leading group and even in the first few laps I have been able to fight with them. Then, I have got stuck with the second group, several riders have passed me and I have lost my concentration. I have decided to take two or three laps to relax and I have gone back on the attack. Little by little I have been able to overtake and I have managed to get to the front of the second group."
