The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has come back from tenth position and has scored his eleventh victory of the year, with which he equals the Italian's record in the lightweight category
The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider remains unstoppable in Moto3 and with his victory in the Australian GP he has equalled Valentino Rossi's record of victories in the lightweight class. The world champion has completed a great comeback in Phillip Island and has achieved his fourth consecutive victory. Alonso has started from tenth position, but that has not been a problem for him. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has started really strong and in just two laps he was already in fourth place. From that moment on, the world champion has always remained in the front positions within a leading group that was made up of up to thirteen riders. Throughout the race, this group has fought an intense battle, with a constant exchange of positions. However, Alonso had an ace up his sleeve. With five laps to go, the Colombian has overtaken Adrián Fernández to take the first position, a place that he has not left until the chequered flag. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider has gradually opened up a gap at the front and has crossed the finish line with almost three seconds of advantage over Dani Holgado and Adrián Fernández, who have completed the podium. The world champion has celebrated his eleventh victory of the year with a bandage on his head, emulating the celebration that Rossi made when he set the record for most victories in the small category in a season at the 1997 Indonesian GP, a race in which he shared the podium with Jorge Martínez ‘Aspar’.
Although Moto3 already knows its 2024 champion, fight for the runner-up position remains remains open between Dani Holgado, Collin Veijer and Iván Ortolá. Today, Veijer and Ortolá have been unable to score points after having crashed together. Thus, Holgado has extended his advantage to 23 points over the Dutch and 41 over the Spanish with 75 left to finish the season.
CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider Joel Esteban has finished the Australian GP just outside the points. Esteban, who has started from twenty-first position on the grid, has made a great start and has climbed to seventeenth place on the first lap. The Spanish has been involved in a great battle throughout the race with Xabi Zurutuza and has fought until the end to get into the points zone. In the end, he has crossed the finish line in sixteenth position. Esteban is already thinking about the Thai GP, where he will have another chance to score points next week.
WIN David Alonso: “I thought it would be difficult to win today. This weekend I have had a hard time staying focused. After winning the World Championship, you relax and stop looking after the details. This happened to me yesterday in qualifying. Also, it was the first time I didn't work on the race plan on Saturday afternoon and I want to apologize to the team for that. Today I have woken up in race mode, very focused. I have been feeling better and better. This celebration is to remember Valentino, because when he got his eleventh victory in 125cc he celebrated like that and since I matched his record today, I wanted to celebrate like he did.”
16th Joel Esteban (+30.578): “I am not happy at all. I had the race planned differently, especially the first laps. The first lap has been good and I made up a lot of positions, but then I have made some mistakes and I have gone backwards. Now I have to think about Thailand.”
