Alonso arrives in strong shape to Austria

The Colombian rider, sixth overall, faces a new challenge at the Red Bull Ring after achieving his first World Championship victory at Silverstone

The Moto3 World Championship reaches the middle of the season this weekend in Austria. The Red Bull Ring hosts the tenth of the twenty events that make up the World Championship calendar on a key weekend for many of the riders in the lightweight category. Moto3 leader Dani Holgado has not left the first position since the beginning of the championship and, after a difficult weekend in Assen, he was able to recover ground in Silverstone, where he achieved his fifth podium of the season. The Spanish rider returns to the circuit where he achieved his first and only pole position in his short World Championship career and will try to still keep his main rivals for the Moto3 title at bay. Holgado now has an advantage of 22 points over Ayumu Sasaki and more than 30 over Jaume Masià, Iván Ortolá or Deniz Öncü.

GASGAS Aspar Team rider David Alonso is facing the Austrian Grand Prix at his best moment of the season. The Colombian arrives at the Red Bull Ring after completing a historic comeback of 27 positions before taking victory at Silverstone. After only eleven races in the World Championship, Alonso has already been on the podium twice and is the current best rookie, with a 30-point advantage over José Antonio Rueda. Alonso, who is also nine points off the top 5 in his World Championship debut, knows the Red Bull Ring very well, as he raced in up to eight different races between 2020 and 2021 in the Red Bull Rookies Cup. In the last three, in addition, he climbed to the top of the podium, on his way to the title. His teammate in the GASGAS Aspar Team, Ryusei Yamanaka, faces a new race week with the desire to take a step forward and be able to fight for the front positions. The Japanese has been scoring points for five consecutive events, including a fifth position in France, and now he hopes that the weekend in Austria will be a turning point to shine in the second part of the championship.

David Alonso: "After the victory at Silverstone, we arrive at a circuit that we know very weel, but not 100%, because last year they changed a couple of corners. Nevertheless, it is not the same as going to a completely new track. In the Red Bull Rookies Cup I won three out of four races in 2021. The approach will remain the same as always, focusing on improving our work alone in practice to improve our riding. Qualifying practice will be important, to be able to get a good starting position and be more prepared for the race.”

Ryusei Yamanaka: “We have to improve in free practice and in the set-up to be able to set good times from the start and make everything easier for the race.”
