The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider will start the Portuguese race from fourth position
Máximo Quiles was just two tenths away from securing his third pole position of the season. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider held first position for almost the entire qualifying session, but a crash in the last sector of the final lap prevented him from achieving his goal and he will start tomorrow's race from fourth position on the starting grid. The pole position for the Portuguese Grand Prix went to Joel Kelso, who beat Scott Ogden by 69 thousandths of a second. The Briton will start second, ahead of Ángel Piqueras, who will complete the front row of the grid.
The Autodromo Internacional do Algarve woke up to a wet track. Given that the forecast for this afternoon's qualifying session was predicted to be dry, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team riders did not take to the track to avoid risks, something that many other riders in the category also did. In the afternoon, Máximo Quiles and Dennis Foggia wanted to continue with the good feelings of the previous day, in which both secured direct passage to Q2. The Spaniard showed great pace from the start of the session to take the provisional top spot. After making a pit stop to change tyres, the Moto3 riders returned to the track to attack and improve their times. Máximo Quiles remained in first place and gave his best to try to achieve his third pole position of the season. However, a small crash in the last sector of the last lap prevented him from achieving his goal and tomorrow he will start the race from fourth position, just two tenths off the reference time. His teammate Dennis Foggia did not have the same feeling as the previous day, which, combined with heavy traffic on the track, made it difficult for him to climb up the rankings. The Italian was only able to achieve the sixteenth best time, but the good feelings from the first day in Portugal make him optimistic about being able to move up the rankings in Sunday's race.
4th Máximo Quiles 1:47.044 (+0.280): “I'm happy. I couldn't finish the lap; I was feeling really good, to be honest, with a time that could have put me in pole position, but well, that's how it goes. We have to keep pushing. The positive thing is that I felt very fast, and even though we only did a few laps today, I know I showed good pace yesterday. I'm really looking forward to racing tomorrow.”
16th Dennis Foggia 1:47.655 (+0.901): “I haven't been feeling great and I had some traffic in qualifying, which hurt my chances. Also, since we couldn't ride in the morning, we introduced a change for qualifying, something that didn't quite work out for us. We'll revert to the previous setup, because with yesterday's setup we were fast. I think we can have a good race; we have the pace and we were having a good weekend. We'll be ready.”
