Both CFMOTO Inde Aspar riders have made it straight to Q2, with Dixon in tenth position and Guevara in eighteenth
Fermín Aldeguer has shone in the Australian GP qualifying to secure his third consecutive pole position in Phillip Island. The Spanish rider, who had already led yesterday, has been the fastest in qualifying after setting a time of 1:30.876, a register with which he has set a new record for the Australian track. Aron Canet has finished second, just 196 thousandths off Aldeguer, while Alonso López has set the third best time, 268 thousandths off his teammate. Thus, the first three positions on the grid will be occupied by the same three riders who did so last year. In addition, tomorrow's race has a special point of interest: Ai Ogura can mathematically seal the Moto2 title. To do so, the Japanese rider will have to come back, as today he has only managed to finish in ninth position. Ogura must score 16 points more than his main rival Sergio García and hope that the other seven riders who still have a mathematical chance of fighting for the title are more than 75 points off him at the end of the race.
The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team has not had an easy day in Phillip Island. Both riders have made it straight to Q2, but in qualifying Dixon has finished in tenth position and Izan Guevara in eighteenth. The British had started the day on the right foot by setting the fourth best time in the final practice session, but with the track completely dry and the strong wing, Dixon has struggled. The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team rider has finished seven-tenths off the pole and will start from the fourth row tomorrow. His teammate was competitive yesterday in both dry and wet conditions. However, he has not felt comfortable today and has crashed twice, one in the last practice session and another in qualifying. The crash in qualifying has affected his position on the grid for tomorrow as he has only been able to set the eighteenth best time. In the end, Guevara will start from seventeenth place as Deniz Oncü has been penalised with three-positions penalty. The Spanish will fight to recover positions from the sixth row of the grid with his mind set on scoring points again.
10th Jake Dixon 1:31.576 (+0.700): “Qualifying practice was the first full dry session we had this weekend, and it didn’t go as we expected. The bike was shaking a lot, I don’t understand why, but we’ll have to study to find the reason to try to improve for tomorrow. We’ll start from tenth position on the grid; it’s not ideal, but it is what it is.”
18th Izan Guevara 1:32.512 (+1.636): “We had two crashes today, in the wet and in the dry. I’m not happy with the feeling, it wasn’t good in either condition. In the morning, we couldn’t complete many laps. The bike doesn’t brake as I want it to, it moves a lot and the wind doesn’t help. We’ll start from quite behind. We’ll have to go over the data very carefully to see where we can improve, but we need a big change to feel comfortable, because we don’t have a good feeling.”
