Rookie sensation in Qatar

CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team rider Dani Holgado finished fourth and fought for the podium until the last laps. David Alonso achieved his best result, eleventh, after making up thirteen positions

The Qatar Grand Prix ended on a high note for the CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team. Dani Holgado and David Alonso consolidated this weekend's progress and gave their all in a very demanding race in terms of tyre management. Holgado was once again one of the protagonists of the day. The Spanish rider made a great start and quickly moved up to the podium positions. The Moto2 rookie had no doubts about fighting one-on-one with more experienced rivals and remained in the top three for most of the race. With four laps to go Holgado dropped to fourth, but was able to hold on and manage tyre degradation to achieve his best result in the intermediate class. Aron Canet was the winner in Qatar, with Deniz Öncü and Manuel González in second and third respectively.

David Alonso also completed his best weekend in Moto2. The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team rider, who started from eleventh on the grid, made a mistake at the start and took a touch in the first corner which, combined, relegated him to the back of the field in the opening laps. Alonso turned the situation around and found his pace to overtake his rivals lap after lap. The Moto3 World Champion had a better feeling as the race progressed and entered the points zone. Alonso was not satisfied with that and kept going until he crossed the finish line in eleventh place, thus achieving his best result in the category.

4th Dani Holgado (+4.021): “It was a spectacular race. I felt really good all weekend and I started with a lot of confidence in the first laps of the race. I tried to stay in the top three because it's very difficult to recover here if you go backwards. I have no words, I feel so proud and so happy. After working so hard, to get this for me is unbelievable. On the bike I had goosebumps, I saw on the straight that there were eight laps to go and I was in the top three and I thought 'come on, it's possible! The whole team is helping me a lot to adapt and to stay on the line. It's a very long championship, there will be ups and downs, but we are doing quite well.”

11th David Alonso (+11.523): “At the beginning of the race I made a rookie mistake. I didn't realise that the start control was off and at the start the bike lifted me up a lot. In the first two corners I was going well, but a lot of riders passed me. I lost my braking reference and I went out of the line, almost at the back. It took me a while to get back on track, but then I learned to overtake in the race and to keep up the pace. It was the most fun I had in Moto2. I just didn't want it to end, I wanted to keep riding and I was enjoying overtaking people. I fought until the end, you have to keep working to know how to move when you are in the pack. We'll keep the pace from the end to take it to Jerez.”
