The CFMOTO Asterius Aspar rider closes the first Grand Prix of the Americas day only half a second off the fastest rider
The Grand Prix of the Americas has started with Fermín Aldeguer as the fastest rider on the intermediate category grid. The Spanish rider has led the session almost from the start and has worked hard throughout the entire practice to lower his time on four more occasions. The 2:08.359 he has set when the chequered flag had already been shown is the new Circuit of the Americas record. In a category as close as Moto2 (in the morning only 0.061 separated the two fastest riders), Aldeguer has managed to leave more than two tenths behind Sergio Garcia and Dennis Foggia. Aron Canet, leader of the World Championship after his victory in Portugal, has finished tenth.
The CFMOTO Asterius Aspar has closed Jake Dixon's return to competition with a fifth position for the British rider. Dixon has been among the fastest riders in the class all day, having finished sixth in the morning. On both occasions he has set his best time in the final part of the session. In the afternoon practice, the CFMOTO Asterius Aspar rider would have finished second, had he not exceeded the track limits in the second sector, what meant he had his lap cancelled. In the end, his time of 2:08.865 has allowed him to finish fifth, half a second behind Aldeguer. His teammate Izan Guevara has finished in twenty-first position on the first day of the Grand Prix of the Americas, 1.3 seconds off the fastest. The Spanish rider is not far from the positions that give provisional access to Q2, although he would have needed to be at least four tenths faster to get into the top fourteen. Guevara has one last chance tomorrow to qualify directly for the fight for the top positions of the grid and is hoping to be able to make the step forward that will allow him to do so.
5th Jake Dixon (+0.506): "It is good to be back after such a long time. Even though it has been already five weeks, I am still recovering, and I am still not feeling 100%. I need to take it one day by day, session by session. I have to rest and continue working tomorrow."
21st Izan Guevara (+1.350): "I have had a good first day, I have done a lot of laps, but we need to improve our time attack. We have worked on the set-up of the bike to be more comfortable. We are not far from getting into Q2, but we need to make a step forward and that is the goal for tomorrow."
