The Aspar Team wins its third rookie title in the intermediate category after fifteen Moto2 seasons
CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar Team rider Dani Holgado clinched the Moto2 Rookie of the Year title this weekend at Portugal, after finishing seventh in today's race. This Rookie of the Year title is the third for an Aspar Team rider in the intermediate category, following those achieved by Jordi Torres in 2013 and Aron Canet in 2020. Among all the Moto2 rookies, only Marc Márquez, Maverick Viñales, Raúl Fernández or Pedro Acosta were able to win more races in their years than the CFMOTO Aspar rider, who has won twice in 2025. Holgado's triumph among Moto2 rookies confirms the commitment of Jorge Martínez “Aspar” and his team to young riders and to a school that has brought almost twenty riders to the World Championship since 2016.
At the end of 2019, his good results caught the attention of Aspar, who decided to sign Holgado for the Aspar Team Junior in his quest to regain the JuniorGP crown. During those years, he was part of one of the strongest line-ups in the Aspar Team Junior, alongside riders such as Izan Guevara, David Alonso and Iván Ortolá in the fight for a title he would achieve in 2021. The joint effort paid off, and the Ricardo Tormo Circuit witnessed Dani Holgado and the Aspar Team being crowned JuniorGP champions after achieving five victories and three more podium finishes that season.
With no place in the team when he moved up to the World Championship, as the Aspar Team competed in 2022 with Sergio García Dols and Izan Guevara in a season that would end up being historic, with the triple crown of riders', teams' and constructors' titles, Holgado had to look for a place in other teams. He began a three-year stint in Moto3 in which his progress was very positive: podium finisher in his first full year, GP winner in his second and a title candidate in his third, the year in which he ended as the Moto3 runner-up. Three podium finishes and a victory in the first five races put him at the top of the World Championship, although an intimidating David Alonso stood in his way.
After three years apart, in 2025 Dani Holgado and the CFMOTO Aspar Team have begun to write a new chapter in their history, but this time in the intermediate category and with his biggest rival in 2024 as his teammate. Jorge Martínez “Aspar” had thus reunited with one of his protégés in a season that promised to be as exciting as it was challenging. The change of category is not easy, but the young rider placed all his trust in the team to face this challenge together.
The CFMOTO Aspar Team rider did not set himself big goals, at least in terms of results, in his first season in Moto2. He did want to take small but sure steps forward and consolidate them in order to continue growing. He scored points in his first Moto2 race, and by the time he finished the Qatar Grand Prix in fourth place, he was already fourth in the World Championship standings. But that good start was followed by four races without scoring points and another three in which he finished between tenth and fifteenth place.
After the summer, the trend reversed again. Holgado and his team never stopped working on themselves, and at the Austrian Grand Prix, the first reward came: his first Moto2 podium, in a race where he finished second behind Diogo Moreira. Then, at the Catalan Grand Prix, he was able to fulfil a dream, that of his first victory, leading the race from start to finish and with a comfortable advantage over the more experienced riders in the category. San Marino and Japan added another podium and another victory to his record, what allowed him to increase his lead in the rookie standings over his biggest rival, once again David Alonso, although this time as his teammate.
Holgado did not change his initial goals and continued to work in the same way with the team, without adding extra pressure and focusing on learning as much as possible. His combination of talent, discipline and commitment has allowed him to excel in every category he has competed in, something that has been reflected again this season, in which he has become the best rookie in the intermediate category in the penultimate race of the season. His prospects in Moto2 open up a path full of possibilities in the near future with the CFMOTO Aspar Team, after a 2025 season in which Dani Holgado has exceeded all expectations.
