Izan Guevara and Jake Dixon have finished in tenth and thirteenth positions respectively, after a race marked by the rain
The chaos has reigned in the Japanese GP as a result of the rain. When the race has started, the track was completely dry and only a few drops of rain were falling. The conditions have changed shortly afterwards, when the rain has intensified in Motegi. This change in the conditions has caused Race Direction to stop the race on the first lap, as all the riders had started on dry tyres. However, when the race has been resumed, it was no longer raining and the track was not completely wet. This has made several riders to decide to go out with dry tyres, a gamble that turned out to be the winner. World Championship leader Ai Ogura has been one of the riders who has chosen dry tyres and, despite starting from ninth position, he was already in first place on the fourth lap. Ogura has led much of the race, but has been unable to beat Manu González. The Spanish, who has started from fourteenth place, has gradually regained positions until, with four laps to go, he has overtaken Ogura to claim his first Moto2 win. Ogura has finished second and Filip Salac, who had already shown on Friday that he was very strong in mixed conditions, has crossed the finish line in third position. With Ogura's second place, the Japanese rider has extended his World Championship lead to 60 points and will have his first chance to mathematically seal the Moto2 title at the Australian GP.
The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team has finished the Japanese GP with both of its riders in the points. Izan Guevara has completed one of his best weekends in Moto2, despite only being able to finish in tenth position. The Spanish has been very competitive since the first practice session, going straight to Q2 and achieving his best result on the grid by setting the fifth best time. In the race, Guevara has had a great start and has climbed to second position. The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team rider has started with wet tyres, so as the race has gone by and the track has dried, he has lost positions until he has crossed the finish line in tenth place. His teammate Jake Dixon, who has started from pole, has maintained the first position in the first laps and has tried to open a gap. However, like Guevara, Dixon had opted for wet tyres, which has condemned his chances. In the end, he has finished in thirteenth place. The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team already has its mind set on the Australian GP, in two weeks.
10th Izan Guevara (+58.933): “I am very frustrated because we deserved to be on the podium today. We had a very good pace, but with the rain everything has gone against us. I have expected it to be a dry race, but on the warm-up lap it has started to rain. It was a race to enjoy and to be in the front group. It is frustrating that after such a good weekend, the rain spoiled our race. We have had very little time to decide which tyre to go out with, I think they should have given us more time, because at that moment the track was neither wet nor dry. We wanted to secure with the wet tyres and it has not worked out for us. Six riders have opted for dry tyres and they have finished in front, we have ended the fourth on wet compounds. We have to be happy with that.”
12+1 Jake Dixon (+59.952): “It has been frustrating. The conditions were pretty tricky. After the red flag I have gone out on wet tyres, I tried to pull away, but I have completely destroyed my tyres and little by little I have gone backwards.”
