Dani Holgado and David Alonso have a good feeling ahead of a race in which they will start from sixth and tenth on the grid
The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team riders finished the second day of the Portuguese Grand Prix with positive feelings. Dani Holgado and David Alonso battled for the top positions on the starting grid and both were less than half a second off pole. Holgado will start the race from the second row, while his teammate Alonso will start from fourth. Diogo Moreira took pole position in the Algarve, while his title rival Manu González will have to fight his way up from eighth place. Jake Dixon and Collin Veijer complete a top three that was decided by thousandths and will occupy second and third positions.
The Moto2 riders were unable to complete this morning's free practice session normally due to mixed track conditions, which made any attempt to work on the bike fruitless. The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team riders couldn't carry out their usual race simulation in this session, managing just a couple of laps in the last minutes. With Holgado and Alonso already qualified for Q2, both took to the track in the afternoon aiming to secure a place on the front rows of the grid. The wind affected riding conditions at Portimao, but the Moto2 rookies were able to improve on their weekend times in qualifying. The Spaniard set his best lap at the very last moment, which also allowed him to record his best time of the weekend, a 1:41.404 that puts him sixth on the grid, just two tenths off pole. His teammate David Alonso also set his best time in the final minutes. The Colombian rider was affected by the gusts of wind, but he adapted to the situation to get the tenth fastest time of the day, four tenths of a second off the pace. Tomorrow, the intermediate category race will kick off an exciting day of racing in which the CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team duo will be aiming for the top positions once again.
6th Dani Holgado 1:41.404 (+0.236): “Today we took a big step forward compared to yesterday because we improved a lot, both in time attack and in setting the pace. I'm a bit disappointed because we couldn't do a race simulation this morning due to the track conditions, so we don't know my true pace. It's not something that worries me, because tomorrow I have another opportunity to learn and adapt to a new situation. I'll have to do it as quickly as possible to catch the leading riders, but I see it as a new challenge. I'm really looking forward to it, to keep improving and enjoying the penultimate race of the year. I want to thank the team for all the work they're doing, because they finished repairing the bike very late yesterday after the crash. Let's all enjoy it together.”
10th David Alonso 1:41.603 (+0.435): “With the first set of tyres, I was running wide in some sections and struggling to understand the wind conditions. I really noticed that in qualifying today. After that, I wanted to go out on the track alone to get a clearer picture, and I was able to improve my time quite a bit. It was a shame that we had a yellow flag on the last lap because I was riding well, but I'm happy because I was able to adapt to the conditions. This afternoon we'll analyze what we need for tomorrow's race, but, overall, it's been a positive day.”
