Alonso's masterclass to get maiden Moto2 podium

The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider takes his first podium in Moto2 at the same circuit where he took his first victory in Moto3

David Alonso took his first podium in Moto2 in a race to remember at Silverstone Circuit. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider stood up to the most experienced riders in the category to fight for victory until the final metres and finish third. The rookie returned to the podium at a circuit where he took his first victory in Moto3 in 2023 and became the first Colombian rider to finish on the podium in the intermediate category. Dani Holgado finished outside the points after being penalised on the last lap for exceeding the track limits and was eighteenth. Senna Agius was the winner of the UK Grand Prix, with Diogo Moreira second. Moto2 standings leader Manu González crashed in the opening laps while Aron Canet, another title contender, was fourth.

Sunday's racing started with the Moto2 riders contesting the first race of the day. With their eyes on the sky after the rain in the morning, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team faced some tricky conditions in the first laps due to the presence of some wet areas. David Alonso, who started from fourth on the grid, got off to a good start and stayed in the front group. The Colombian rider showed a great pace from the first laps and remained in the top 5. Alonso showed great maturity throughout the 17 laps and made numerous overtakes to fight for the podium. With five laps to go, the Moto3 World Champion led the race after a double overtake and, from that moment on, the numerous changes of positions left everything to be decided on the last lap. Alonso increased the pace at this point to give his best, especially in a great last sector, in which he even tried to overtake to take the victory. In the end, he crossed the line in third position and took his first podium in the intermediate category, the first for the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team this season.

Dani Holgado also made a good start to stay in the top 10 for the first few laps. The Spanish rider took advantage of the good initial feelings to make up some places. Holgado remained in the front group until it split after the first half of the race. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider, however, did not have the same feeling in the final laps and lost some positions, although he remained in the points. Unfortunately, Holgado finished in eighteenth place after he got penalised on the last lap for exceeding the track limits. Despite not scoring any points, Holgado remains the best Moto2 rookie and leaves Silverstone with a great learning experience.

3rd David Alonso (+0.498): “Today we were very competitive, I even thought about winning, but it wasn't possible because these riders have a lot of experience. It has been a difficult start to the season for me to adapt to Moto2. There have been many days of frustration, but to come to Silverstone, where I won my first race in Moto3, and to get my first podium here in Moto2... it's definitely a very special place. I dedicate it to the whole team because they have always supported me and, in the first part of the season, they believed in me when I did not. It was very hard for me to accept this third place at the beginning because I saw the victory very close. Thinking about it now, it's unbelievable. After where we came from, to have done this race with more experienced riders is a very good thing. I managed to make a decent start, I had a lot of fights with other riders, which made me spend a lot of energy in the first laps and I had to dose it. I wasn't feeling good physically today, but in the end everything went well. I'm very happy to be back on the podium.”

18th Dani Holgado (+19.552): “It was a bit of a complicated race. At the beginning we were fighting in the top 10, but in the middle of the race I lost a bit of feeling. As the tyres wore out, I struggled a bit with acceleration and passing through turns, but we have to keep working to improve that feeling at the end of the race. It wasn't a weekend to be in the top five, but it was a weekend to have been in the top ten. We don't have to be discouraged by these results, we will keep working and I'm sure that our moment will come back. I want to thank the team for their work because they are doing a great job, the results are good and it is an extra motivation to get back to the front little by little.”
