The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team rider secured his first victory in Moto2 on the final lap after climbing back from eleventh position
David Alonso has achieved his first victory in the intermediate category at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team rider completed a great race, climbing from eleventh position to reach the top of the podium at Balaton Park. The Moto2 rookie overtook the main title contenders such as Diogo Moreira, who finished second, and the leader of the standings, Manu González, who finished third. Aron Canet could only manage sixth, while the other half of the CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team, Dani Holgado, finished ninth in a difficult but educational race.
The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team started the Moto2 race from the third row of the grid. The two rookies tried to make a good start to get close to the leading riders. However, both David Alonso and Dani Holgado lost a few positions in the early stages. The Colombian rider found a comfortable pace that allowed him to overtake his rivals on each lap. Alonso, who was coming off a bitter crash in Austria while fighting for another podium, rode with great fluidity until he reached the top 5. In the final stretch of the race, he saw clear chances for a podium finish and increased his pace to continue climbing up the rankings. The Moto3 world champion was not satisfied with second place at Balaton Park after making up more than four seconds on the leader. In a perfect final lap, he emulated his Moto3 teammate Máximo Quiles to take the lead in the last corner and achieve a hard-fought and dream victory. This victory is the first for a Colombian rider in Moto2 and the first for Moto2 a rookie since Pedro Acosta's victories in 2022. On the other hand, his teammate Dani Holgado also had to fight his way back up the field from the early laps. The CFMOTO Inde Aspar Team rider was coming off his first Moto2 podium in Austria and, on this occasion, wanted to continue working to close the gap on the leading riders. The Spaniard maintained a good pace which, although not enough to reach the top 5, did allow him to enter the top 10 to finish in ninth position and remain the best rookie in the category.
1st David Alonso: “With two laps to go, I said to myself, “if I'm here, today is the day to get the win.” During the race, I was in a bubble: I didn't know how many laps were left, I was just focused on catching the rider in front of me and overtaking him. I didn't know I was going to make it to the podium until I saw the opportunity. I don't know what to say, both the team and my family are supporting me a lot. Yesterday in qualifying I finished feeling down because I didn't manage to get the most out of myself and today I started from the back. I felt like the weekend was over, but today I believed in myself and in everyone who believes in me.”
9th Dani Holgado (+8.126): “It was a good race, although I struggled at the start. I made a mistake in the second corner and had a hard time overtaking the other riders. Once I managed to do that, I was able to set my pace. It wasn't better than the rest, but I was one or two tenths slower than the riders fighting for the podium. We have to keep working. This weekend we weren't as competitive as in the last two Grand Prix, but we can also learn a lot from days like this.”
