CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team completed one of its best qualifying sessions of the season, with David Alonso fourth and Dani Holgado ninth
David Alonso achieved his best grid result in the intermediate class and will start tomorrow's UK Grand Prix from fourth position after having to go through Q1. Dani Holgado, meanwhile, is also in with a chance of a good start from the third row. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team riders are becoming more and more competitive, and this weekend they proved it again by completing one of the strongest qualifying sessions for the rookie duo. As for the other riders in the intermediate class, Aron Canet took pole at Silverstone with a tenth of a second advantage ahead of his main championship rival, Moto2 leader Manu González, who was second. Brazilian Diogo Moreira will start from third position in a race that will start at 11:15 local time.
Despite the track conditions presenting a very different scenario to Friday, Alonso and Holgado made the most of the opportunity to continue gaining experience on the Moto2 bike. The reigning Moto3 World Champion had to compete in Q1, as he was unable to improve his lap times yesterday after an early crash. In this afternoon's qualifying Alonso took to the track with clear ideas and determined to get a place in Q2. The Colombian led most of the laps and finished second in Q1. In the final Q2, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider showed a great version and in the last minutes he was in the front positions, with options to occupy the first row. In the end, his 2:02.992, his best time of the weekend, placed him in fourth position. At the same time, Dani Holgado also had a good qualifying session at the British circuit after he avoided Q1 yesterday. The Spanish rider set his best lap in the early stages and, although he didn't have the best feeling on Saturday, he fulfilled his goal of occupying the front rows and will start the race from ninth position, after setting a time of 2:03.709.
4th David Alonso 2:02.992 (+0.510): “I'm happy with the result. When you suffer, you value these moments and enjoy them more. When you experience it first-hand it is not easy, I had not started the weekend as I would have liked. Today I talked to myself and I said to myself ‘today nobody is going to take away a good day, regardless of where I finish we are going to have a good Saturday’. I have to polish some details, like the start. This afternoon we will continue to work on it because it is not my strong point, but we want to adjust it a bit more to be well placed in the first laps. If we build that base, we can learn from the riders at the front and perfect the technique.”
9th Dani Holgado 2:03.709 (+1.227): “Today's result at Silverstone wasn't bad, a third row was within our targets. I'm happy about it, although I'm a little bit bittersweet because the feeling wasn't good enough compared to yesterday. The track changed: it was raining this morning and we lost a bit of grip. I didn't feel 100%, but we did a great job with the team. The starting position is positive, we will continue to analyse the data so that tomorrow we will have a bike that is more adapted if these conditions are repeated. If I do a good first few laps I can be in the front group. Then we have to keep going, because the difficult thing with these bikes is to get back up. We're going to enjoy it and keep improving, it will be important to stay calm and manage the tyres well.”
