The CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar rider secured direct entry into Q2 with the third fastest time on Friday. Dani Holgado, on the other hand, will have to go through Q1 after suffering a crash
David Alonso had a great Friday at the Phillip Island circuit. The CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar Team rider set the third fastest time and fought for the top spots despite the difficult conditions. The Colombian was two tenths behind the fastest riders, Diogo Moreira and Senna Agius. The Brazilian and the Australian were separated by only eight thousandths of a second, first and second respectively. Holgado will have to go through Q1 after suffering a crash at the start of the session
The Australian Grand Prix got off to a good start for the CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar Team riders. David Alonso and Dani Holgado took to the track with their minds set on adapting to one of the most demanding circuits on the calendar. Both finished in the top 10, with the Colombian in second place, just a few thousandths behind the fastest, and the Spaniard in seventh place. In the afternoon, the rookies in the intermediate category focused on securing a place in Q2. David Alonso showed great consistency despite the strong wind, which affected the handling of the bikes on a day that saw several crashes among the Moto2 riders. The CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar Team rider was the first to break the track record this afternoon and led the session with a time of 1:30.535, which ultimately earned him third place. His teammate Dani Holgado suffered an unexpected crash at the ninth corner during the early stages of practice. The Spaniard was able to recover and return to the track, although he was only able to complete five laps. Holgado was able to improve on his time from the morning, but it was not enough to make it into Q2.
3rd David Alonso 1:30.535 (+0.228): “I was curious to ride the Moto2 here at Phillip Island because the Moto3 was already very fast. I loved it, with the wind and the fast corners, the adrenaline is really high. It’s very fast and you have to dance with the bike because it moves a lot. I tried to flow in the same way as when you do motocross and to hold on tight with my legs. I ride the bike more freely and I am more present in the moment. To be more comfortable tomorrow, we have to improve in the first sector or try to be a little more consistent. I don't expect anything because when I am more focused, the results are not the same. I want to enjoy myself and see how far we can go.”
21st Dani Holgado 1:31.510 (+1.203): “Physically, I feel fine after the crash and I only have a little pain in my right foot. It was a bit of a nasty crash, it was the first lap and I think I took the corner with too much throttle. The bike went a bit wide, it was a gradual slide, but as it was downhill, it caught me in an area with less grip and the crash was even harder. It took me a while to regain 100% confidence, but I'm happy because I was able to improve my time from this morning in two laps. I'm focusing on improving and tomorrow our goal will be to take it slowly to continue regaining those feelings. This morning I felt pretty good and I want to take another step forward in terms of speed. Today it's time to learn from our mistakes in order to keep improving, and tomorrow it will be important to deliver on these aspects. I want to ride more smoothly and we'll work on that ahead of qualifying.”
