Jordi Torres achieved the eighth fastest time in qualifying in Hungary, while Kevin Zannoni will start twelfth after failing to make it through Q1
The Power Electronics Aspar Team has kicked off the fourth round of the season, which is taking place this weekend in Hungary. Jordi Torres and Kevin Zannoni faced the double challenge of adapting to a new circuit on the calendar while also preparing for this afternoon's qualifying session. The Spanish rider secured direct entry into Q2 and will start tomorrow's race from eighth on the grid. His teammate Kevin Zannoni will start from twelfth position after narrowly missing out on Q1. On this occasion, pole position went to Italian Mattia Casadei, followed by Lorenzo Baldassarri and Eric Granado in second and third respectively.
The Hungarian Grand Prix began with an intense day of work for the Power Electronics Aspar Team. Jordi Torres and Kevin Zannoni completed this morning's two practice sessions in search of a configuration for their bikes that would allow them to ride as smoothly as possible on a track that proved to be very technical for all the riders. Torres did not start the morning on the best of terms, but the Spanish rider went from strength to strength and was able to secure a place in this afternoon's Q2. The Power Electronics Aspar Team rider tried to be as competitive as possible in Friday's qualifying, aiming to secure at least a place on the second row of the grid. In the end, his 1:46.323 put him in eighth position, seven tenths of a second off pole position. On the other hand, his teammate Kevin Zannoni was unable to secure direct entry into Q2 and had to take part in Q1 this afternoon. The Italian rider tried to catch up with the fastest riders and fought for the top two positions until the very last moments. Zannoni has taken a step forward in terms of feeling compared to previous rounds, although his 1:46.365 left him in fourth position in this session, which means he will start tomorrow's MotoE races from twelfth position. The Power Electronics Aspar Team rider is confident of recovering positions tomorrow and adding new points to the standings.
8th Jordi Torres 1:46.323: “We have discovered a rather unusual circuit. Each section of corners starts with a chicane, so there are many areas where you have to brake hard. It has been a long day because we had to learn the lines and, above all, the braking points. On a flat circuit it is complicated and I found it a bit difficult to put together a good lap. I get to the corner, but I have to memorise those reference points well because it's easy to make a mistake. We did as many laps as we could, which isn't enough to learn the track, but we defended ourselves well. The positive thing is that we managed to go straight through to Q2. It's not the style I like best, but we're defending ourselves well and I'm trying to improve the areas that I find most difficult. Tomorrow's races will be about finishing memorising all the reference points, and I have to try to focus on that to get the best out of myself on this circuit.”
12th Kevin Zannoni 1:46.365: “Qualifying was a bit complicated, and we didn't make it through to Q2. It was a very difficult session because there were a lot of riders fighting for the top two positions. The time was good, even though we didn't achieve our goal. The most positive thing is that I'm improving my riding feel, we're finding new things and that's important. This afternoon we'll continue working to take another step forward and try to move up the positions in tomorrow's races.”
