The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider set the sixth-fastest time in Moto3 qualifying, three tenths off pole position
Máximo Quiles is all set for the big moment of the weekend. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider will be fighting to clinch the championship title in Indonesia from sixth on the starting grid. Quiles finished three tenths off pole position and will have to catch up with his rivals, who will all be starting from the front row. Brian Uriarte will lead the starting grid, followed by David Almansa in second and Álvaro Carpe in third. Marco Morelli will have to fight his way up from the back of the grid after failing to progress from Q1.
The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team has completed the Moto3 qualifying sessions with mixed results for Máximo Quiles and Marco Morelli. The Spaniard faces his second chance this weekend to be crowned world champion in the category and is thoroughly preparing for Sunday’s race. Quiles led this morning’s free practice session, breaking the track record and setting the pace from the very start of the day. In Q2, Quiles took to the track determined to secure a place in the top three once again. Just before stopping to change tyres, he suffered a minor crash with no consequences, but remained in the fight for pole position and was one of the pace-setters. In the dying moments, with the session time up, he set the third-fastest time of the session, but was overtaken by other riders and will start from the second row tomorrow, in sixth position. His team-mate Marco Morelli stepped up his game this morning and faced a crucial Q1 session to secure a good starting position. The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider fell two tenths short of the cut-off and will have to fight his way up from twenty-second on the grid tomorrow to pick up more points in the standings.
6th Máximo Quiles 1:37.216: “I’ll take the positives from the day and the good pace I’ve maintained throughout all the sessions. This afternoon we’ll analyse what happened with the crash, but I’m not going to dwell too much on the timed lap. Tomorrow is the big day. I learnt some things in Japan that I’ll try to apply in the race. We’ll enjoy ourselves as always and stick to our strategy. Everything remains the same. I feel really supported by the team and by everyone here; that’s a real motivation.”
22nd Marco Morelli 1:38.394: “It’s been a tricky Saturday. This morning I managed to take a step forward and I thought that, if we changed a couple more things to the set-up this afternoon, we could take another step forward. It wasn’t possible. I’m still missing that feeling I had at the start of the season; we need to keep working to find our way back. I’ll try to fight my way back up to where we deserve to be. Tomorrow we have another chance and I’ll give it my all to get a good result.”
