The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider, who is already among the most successful riders in Moto3 history, is keen to continue extending his lead in the overall standings
The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team continues to celebrate new successes race after race. Máximo Quiles secured his eighth win of the year at Misano, thanks to a clever overtaking manoeuvre on the final corner. The Moto3 leader has once again surpassed the 100-point mark (107 in total) after the gap had narrowed following the collarbone injury that forced him to miss the British Grand Prix. Since his return, he has won every race he has contested and is already one of the most successful riders in the junior class. The Murcia-born rider is keeping his feet on the ground and does not yet want to talk about the Moto3 title, preferring instead to focus on the next Grand Prix on the calendar: the Austrian Grand Prix. The fifteenth round of the season – in which Quiles was fourth last year – could be considered one of the most important on the calendar, as it is the last race on the European continent before the Asian tour begins. This period will be one of the most demanding of the whole year, and being as well-prepared as possible will be crucial to maintaining our form.
His team-mate Marco Morelli is keen to fight for the podium once again. After the Argentine had a difficult race in San Marino, Austria will be a relatively new venue for him: he has not yet competed there in Moto3, although he did so during his time in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, where he even made it onto the podium. Morelli is well aware of the importance of scoring as many points as possible to close the gap on the top three in the overall standings. With 138 points, he remains in fifth place, 16 points behind fourth-placed Brian Uriarte and 21 points behind third-placed Álvaro Carpe. The latter has lost second place to David Almansa, who, following his victory last Sunday, has become Quiles’ main challenger.
Máximo Quiles: “I’m really excited after our latest victory and about continuing to pick up points every weekend. The team is doing a brilliant job and we’re going to carry on in the same vein because it’s working out really well for us. It’s a very long weekend, so we need to take it easy, build up gradually and keep a cool head. If a practice session doesn’t go as we’d like, we need to stay calm and keep pushing, but always enjoy ourselves.”
Marco Morelli: “I’m keen to make amends for the race at Misano. The Austrian circuit is very technical, with lots of ups and downs, and some very heavy braking points. It’ll be important to adapt quickly so we can prepare well for the race and get back into the fight for the top positions. In recent races we’ve made great strides forward; we’re getting a clearer picture of things all the time, and we’ll keep working to be competitive again this weekend.”
