The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider was 6.5 seconds off the leader at the halfway point of the race, but he has climbed a total of 8 positions to finish fourth

David Alonso and the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team came within a whisker of the podium at the Spanish Grand Prix. Only a less-than-ideal start prevented the Colombian from fighting for higher positions in a race where he finished fourth, after climbing eight places and recovering almost five seconds from the leader. Australian Senna Agius got back-to-back victories after winning in the United States and adds 25 points to his tally, which puts him second in the overall standings, just behind his teammate, Manu González, who finished second today. The Jerez podium was completed by Dutchman Collin Veijer, who started from pole position for the first time in Moto2 and finished third, one second behind the winner. CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider Dani Holgado ended the race at the Jerez – Ángel Nieto circuit in eleventh position.

David Alonso and Dani Holgado had enviable grid positions, sixth and seventh respectively, to shine today in Jerez. Holgado took advantage of this and was fifth on the first lap, but a mistake shifting gears at the start dropped Alonso into the middle of the pack, causing him to lose time and distance to the leading riders. That moment defined the Colombian's race, as he had to fight his way back from twelfth place and at one point was more than six seconds behind the leader. Little by little, the CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider recovered the lost ground, at times lapping more than half a second faster than the riders ahead of him. This faster pace, however, wasn't enough to secure a podium finish. As in Austin, Alonso was just a few laps away from a top-three finish, but with this fourth place, he now sits sixth in the standings, one point behind his teammate. Dani Holgado was unable to capitalize on his form today in Jerez. Dani Holgado couldn't finish the weekend among the frontrunners, as he did on Friday and Saturday, and had to settle for eleventh place after a mentally demanding race, in which he nevertheless managed to avoid mistakes he might regret later.

4th David Alonso (+2.032): “My pace is improving, and I’m having better races. I enjoyed myself today, but at the start, I didn’t shift gears correctly, and the bike went into neutral, which left me off the top riders. I made a mistake, and I accept it, but I must learn from these situations, so they don’t happen again.”

11th Dani Holgado (+12.934): “It was a somewhat complicated Sunday. I made a good start that allowed me to get into a good position. My pace at the beginning wasn't bad; my speed allowed me to be among the top five or six. As the laps went by, however, I found it very difficult to enter the corners, especially the fast ones. I tried to do my best and managed to score a few points. I felt bad and wanted to stay calm to avoid a mistake that could cost us dearly in the future. It was a mentally tough race because, lacking confidence, it was very easy to make a mistake. Now we have to keep working; this is also part of the process, and I will try to apply it to the next races.”
