Alonso stages an epic comeback in Austin

The CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar rider finished fourth after starting the race from seventeenth

David Alonso was one of the standout riders this Sunday at the Circuit of the Americas. The CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar rider crossed the finish line in fourth place after having to start from seventeenth position. The Colombian finished just one second off the podium in a race that had to be restarted following a multiple crash on the first lap, in which he was involved. Senna Agius took the win in Moto2, followed by Celestino Vietti and Izan Guevara, finishing second and third respectively. Dani Holgado did not have a good Sunday and finished just outside the points, in sixteenth place.

The Moto2 race got off to a very eventful start, particularly for the CFMOTO Power Electronics Aspar riders. Dani Holgado crashed at the first corner and, just as it seemed the race was over for the Spanish rider, a pile-up at Turn 11 forced the race to be stopped. His team-mate David Alonso was involved in this second incident, but fortunately neither of them suffered any negative consequences and both were able to return to their garage to take their places on the starting grid once more and after a great effort by the team to repair the bikes. In the second race, which was also shortened to ten laps, the Colombian staged one of the greatest comebacks of the day and quickly moved into the points-scoring positions. Alonso wasn’t satisfied continued to ride comfortably to overtake his rivals. In the final laps, he climbed up to fourth place, but ran out of time to close the gap on the podium positions and crossed the finish line in that position. Meanwhile, his teammate Dani Holgado found himself in a completely different situation. The Spaniard struggled to find the right feel for the bike, and this was compounded by a ‘long lap’ penalty for the incident in the first race. Holgado tried to maintain a steady pace in order to pick up some points in the championship, but ultimately fell just short of his target, finishing sixteenth.

4th David Alonso (+1.843): “First of all, I’d like express my gratitude that that we’re all right after a very dangerous start. The race was short and I would have liked to have done more laps, but I’ve improved my consistency compared to the previous race. It feels like we’re not quite there yet, but if you look at it closely, we are making progress and picking up points. I think I need to keep going in this direction and focus on bringing out the best in myself. I had two dangerous moments this Sunday: I was hit in the first corner, my airbag deployed and I carried on; and then at turn eleven it all felt like a video game. I didn’t really understand what was happening and found myself caught up in a pile-up. I hope everyone is as okay as can be.”

16th Dani Holgado (+21.206): “It’s been a bit of a difficult week in Austin, but we’ve still worked as hard as we could. It’s been tough days, but things have been feeling better. In the race, however, it was the opposite. I didn’t feel comfortable on the bike. I tried to do my best after a bad start because I crashed and made contact with another rider, so I was penalised with a ‘long lap’. I tried to gather as much data as possible and stay calm. In situations like this, you have to learn; I hope that in the future I can improve on these feelings. I’m happy because I’ve had two very good first races this season; I can’t dwell on the negative. I want to thank the team because they’ve given their all to make today the best it could be. I have to keep pushing and giving one hundred per cent because the good things will come when we least expect them.”
